Move aside, maid cafes — this Tokyo cafe has actors who pretend to be your friends - Japan Today

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

Tokyo’s Harajuku is always at the forefront of youth culture trends, where you can experiment with new trends in fashion, and if you know where to go, new trends in cafe culture too.

The latest place to cause a stir in the neighborhood is Tomodachi ga Yatteru Cafe, which translates to either Cafe Run by Your Friend or Cafe Run by Your Friends, due to the word tomodachi being both singular and plural, depending on the context.

Screen-Shot-2023-04-29-at-12.56.11.png

Either way, when you walk through the door here it’s safe to say that everyone here is your friend, because it’s staffed by actors who’ll greet you with the same relaxed demeanour and conversational chat you’d expect from someone who’s known you a while.

▼ Members of staff include actors, models and creatives in the entertainment industry.

Screen-Shot-2023-04-29-at-12.56.20.png

This unique approach to serving customers is particularly profound in Japan, where staff in the customer service industry generally use keigo (honorific speech) when speaking to customers. On one hand, this type of honorific language is a wonderful way of showing respect and making the customer feel like a god, but on the other hand, it creates a barrier between the customer and staff as it lends itself to a formal atmosphere that’s totally removed from the way one would converse with friends.

The formal nature of customer service in Japan makes it hard for a customer to strike up a casual conversation with staff at a cafe here, in a way that might come easily and naturally abroad. And that’s where Tomodachi ga Yatteru Cafe aims to step in, taking things up a notch by giving customers the chance to experience what it might feel like to step into a cafe that’s run by your friend.

▼ If you’re going to have a friend that runs a cafe, there’s no cooler place for that cafe to be than in Harajuku.

Screen-Shot-2023-04-29-at-12.56.28.png

The idea of visiting a friend’s cafe in Harajuku is one that particularly appealed to our reporter, and Harajuku fashionista wannabe, Mr Sato, who’s been trying to fit in with the cool crowd in this hip neighborhood for years.

So he headed out to pay the place a visit, making his way to the third floor at the sign that read 友だちがやってるカフェ (Tomodachi ga Yatteru Cafe).

Screen-Shot-2023-04-29-at-12.56.35.png

Despite his unbridled enthusiasm for crazy food challenges and pole-dancing on rooftops, Mr Sato says he’s not great at meeting people for the first time. When he talks to people he doesn’t know well his nerves tend to take over, making his face twitch with shyness, and he doesn’t like it when he feels forced to be friendly.

So while Mr Sato was keen to feel like he had fashionable friends in loftier places other than the SoraNews24 office, this cafe visit was going to be a test of his nerves. And when he stood before the glass door of the cafe and saw an attractive female member of staff wave at him from behind the counter, he felt his pulse quicken.

“No lady like this would ever be friends with an old, bearded, long-haired man like me in real life,” was the thought that immediately ran through his head, but lo and behold, their friendship had already begun.

Screen-Shot-2023-04-29-at-12.56.44.png
Photo: SoraNews24

As he stepped through the front door, she called out to him with a smile, saying, “Long time no see!”

This greeting was far removed from the usual Irasshaimase (“Welcome“) that Mr Sato is used to hearing upon entering an establishment like this, but strangely, he didn’t feel as if it was forced or inappropriate.

Screen-Shot-2023-04-29-at-12.56.52.png

After taking stock of the situation for a few seconds, Mr Sato returned the reply, saying, “Long time no see!”

With the walls around his anxious heart already melting, the waitress didn’t miss a beat as she continued their conversation. “How long has it been, now? Three years?”

Mr Sato smiled, as they both knew this cafe had only opened a few days earlier, on 22 April. Still, he appreciated her setting up the groundwork of their friendship for him, so he replied with: “Yeah, that’s right. It’s been a while.”

The air of familiarity continued as she told him, “We’re a bit full right now.” To which Mr Sato replied with: “Yeah, you look busy.”

With a lot of the tables full, Mr Sato decided to get a drink to go, and when he looked at the menu, he immediately knew what he would order.

“Well, then, I’ll just get what I always drink.”

This wasn’t a sterling bit of improvisation on Mr Sato’s behalf — it’s actually an option listed on the menu as Itsumo nonderu yatsu (“What you always drink“).

▼ Itsumo nonderu yatsu is underlined on the menu below.

Screen-Shot-2023-04-29-at-12.57.03.png
Photo: SoraNews24

With prices ranging from 680-960 yen, it’s a bit of a gamble to choose this option, but it’s a low-risk one, as staff suggest what you’d like before making it, and customers can always refuse or suggest something else, just as they would when talking to a friend.

Screen-Shot-2023-04-29-at-12.57.12.png

Mr Sato must’ve fit the profile for a drip coffee-loving man, as his friend behind the counter said:

“You always like drip coffee, right? Hot? Iced?”

Mr Sato did want to drink drip coffee, so for a fleeting moment he wondered if they might’ve really been friends three years ago. Shaking off the impossible thought, he smiled and said: “It’s cold today, so I’ll have it hot, please.”

Screen-Shot-2023-04-29-at-12.57.20.png

With that, his friendly mate went about preparing his coffee for him, and while he was waiting, another member of staff struck up a conversation with him, saying:

“Sorry to make you wait. It’ll just be a moment. But, hey, by the way, hasn’t it been a while? Since we went to the art gallery?”

Well, this was an unexpected turn of events. Mr Sato felt himself being pulled into another fictional story that was so believable it had him wondering if he was losing his memory.

Mr Sato: “Eh, ah, no…I didn’t go to the art gallery.”

Staff: “No way, a group of us went to the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art together one time.”

With Mr Sato’s acting skills being as bad as his first-time conversation skills, he found himself taking a moment to come up with a witty response, but thankfully his sparring partner was already on the ball, switching topics to say:

“If you were coming, you should’ve sent me a message on Line!” [Line is Japan’s most popular messaging app]

Completely in awe of the staff member’s cheerful communication skills, Mr Sato smiled as his friend handed him his drink while saying, “Come back anytime! I’ll be waiting for you.”

It was the perfect moment for Mr Sato to take his leave, and as he did, he felt like he was saying “see you later” to a couple of his coolest friends.

▼ Incidentally, if Mr Sato had ordered two drinks, he would’ve had a cool way to carry them out as well.

Screen-Shot-2023-04-29-at-12.57.28.png

Sipping on his coffee outside the cafe, Mr Sato pondered over what had just happened. He’d felt surprisingly comfortable in the presence of staff, and after their interaction, he wondered if more cafes and stores in Japan would do well to adopt this more casual, friendly approach to serving customers.

Anyone who didn’t know about the cafe before visiting would be in for a confusing surprise when greeted by the overly friendly staff, but for Mr Sato, it reminded him of the friendly banter he often sees in cafe scenes in foreign films, and the skit-like performance aspect of it all left him feeling like the star of his very own film.

Mr Sato says there are a few things to note before visiting the cafe — they don’t accept cash payments, and bar food and drinks are on the menu from 5:30 p.m. Also, Mr Sato’s conversation with staff took place entirely in Japanese, and the cafe doesn’t mention anything about other language options, so the banter might be limited for those wanting to converse in other languages.

Screen-Shot-2023-04-29-at-12.57.37.png

All in all, Mr Sato reckons this is a great place to visit for people wanting a deeper connection to Harajuku and its cool culture, and it’s a lot more stylish and far less kitschy than visiting a maid cafe. It’s nice to know he’ll always have a place in Tokyo where he can feel like he’s amongst friends, and it’s now been added to his list of regular places to visit in Harajuku.

Oldest Cafe in Texas reopens in Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (KTRK) -- Cafe Texan has been on the same corner in downtown Huntsville for 87 years, but for the last three its delicious chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy have been on hold.

ABC13's Dave Ward grew up in Huntsville. Cafe Texan was a big part of his growing up years.

"As a kid I would go there often with my father, I would order the trout with tartar sauce and mashed potatoes and English peas for 75 cents," Ward said.

The pandemic shutdown the cafe in early 2020 but Vance Howard is bringing it back. Vance, a former Huntsville Council member and Mayor Pro Tem, is pumping life back into Cafe Texan with a really cool twist.

"When we bought it from John Strickland we decided to bring it back as a restaurant and museum and make it a non-profit. So all the profits that the cafe makes will go to local and state charities," Howard said.

For Vance and his wife Karen it's all about giving back and preserving Cafe Texan history while giving visitors a taste of World History. The Museum collection is a must see. You will find Dave Ward's boots and ABC13 belt buckle in the same room as 16th century Japanese armor, the 31 star flag that flew over Abraham Lincoln's 1860 Presidential campaign, Egyptian artifacts and even Napoleon Bonaparte's pistol. Navy Seal Lone Survivor Marcus Luttrell's combat uniform along with his brother Morgan's are on display. Marcus and Morgan both attended Sam Houston St before serving in the military.

'Food from beauty spot café looked nothing like online photos' - Manchester Evening News

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

In today's social media driven society, nothing pulls in customers more than some sleek photos shared online.

And when your cafe is set at the beautiful Pennington Flash in Leigh, Wigan, it's the perfect backdrop for those 'Instagrammable' images.

The Hide Coffee House is making the most of its setting by sharing photos of its food and drink amid the relaxing setting.

But so far, things are running far from smoothly. We reported last week how the venue has been hit with scathing reviews from unhappy customers.

READ MORE: Join the FREE Manchester Evening News WhatsApp community

While some slated the venue's card-only policy, others said they were disappointed with the 'overpriced' and 'inedible' food, claiming the toasties, costing £6.45, taste 'like rubber'.

I decided to try it out for myself, taking my two children along for a drink and a bite to eat.

As it was mid-afternoon last Saturday, I think we'd missed the lunchtime rush - and around half of the menu had been crossed off as it was no longer available.

Half of the menu was crossed out
Half of the menu was crossed out

With limited options to choose from, my son ordered a bacon barm, I went for a toasted teacake and my daughter chose a waffle and ice cream.

Despite seven members of staff behind the counter - taking orders inside the cafe and through the little window hatch at the side - it seemed a little chaotic, with nobody that clear on who was doing what.

And what we got looked nothing like those photos used to sell this place.

It was supposed to be 'bacon on a soft white barm', priced £3.75
It was supposed to be 'bacon on a soft white barm', priced £3.75

For a start everything arrived in a box and my latte in a cardboard cup. Apparently plates and mugs are only used on weekdays because at weekends it's simply too busy and the dishwasher wouldn't cope.

I get it as a takeaway option, but when you're sitting in, it kind of takes the appeal off what you're having. I'm sure the boxes are recyclable, but they're certainly going through a hell of a lot of them.

It wouldn't be so bad if the food itself was of a decent quality. The supposed 'bacon on a soft white barm' ordered for my son was actually a dry toasted bun, with very little bacon considering the £3.75 price tag.

Toasted teacake, £2.50
Toasted teacake, £2.50

My burnt teacake, for £2.50, looked just as unappealing, although it didn't taste too bad once I'd smothered it with butter.

The waffle and ice cream, priced £4.50, was OK, but nothing to write home about. It's not quite the same when waffles are warmed up from the display counter, rather than made to order, and again the box it came in made it a rather sad looking dessert.

The disappointment of my teacake was somewhat diminished by the devouring of a Biscoff cronut - which thankfully came in a paper bag rather than another box - but that was also a tad expensive at £3.50, as was the £2.50 croissant my son demolished after still being hungry from his rather pitiful barm.

Waffle and ice cream, £4.50
Waffle and ice cream, £4.50

With the coffee, a Pepsi and a small carton or orange juice, it came to £23 overall, quite a hefty bill for a quick snack.

On the positive side, the place looks great, it was nice and clean and a member of staff was wiping down outside tables as we were there.

The Hide's Facebook photo, left, with the reality, right

I get why some people are annoyed by the card-only system - even I forgot and sent my son up with cash to pay for his additional croissant - but generally I'll only have my card on me anyway as it's becoming the norm for many businesses to have that same policy.

I hope what the business is having now is teething problems, as a place like this has so much promise, and will no doubt get even busier once the new play area next to it is finished.

Maybe if some of the staff behind the counter could wash some dishes, or find room for another dishwasher, they might even be able to start serving stuff on plates.

A huge new playground is being built close to the cafe

The café, which is operated by Leigh Sports Village on behalf of Wigan Council, is open seven days a week, open 9am-7pm from April to October and 9am-4pm from November to March.

Patron Saint, an Italian-Inspired All-Day Cafe and Aperitivo Bar, Opening in Ohio City - Cleveland Scene

takanadalagi.blogspot.com
click to enlarge Owner Marie Artale - Douglas Trattner

Douglas Trattner

Owner Marie Artale

For 20 years, the striking Vitrolite Building (2915 Detroit Ave.) in Ohio City had been home to the Intermuseum Conservation Association, but before that it was a showroom and warehouse for Vitrolite tile – aka pigmented structural glass. Soon, the property will exhibit a more community-minded purpose when a trio of businesses – Harness Cycle, Soul Yoga and Patron Saint – open in late May.

Occupying the former showroom storefront at ground level will be Patron Saint, which owner Marie Artale describes as an “Italian-inspired all-day café and aperitivo bar.” The 1,600-square-foot space features beamed 15-foot ceilings, 100-year-old tile flooring, graceful arches, and walls clad in various shades and designs of Vitrolite glass.

As an all-day café, Patron Saint will transition from early morning coffee service through early evening aperitivo hour. The 50-seat café will offer a window counter with lake views, comfortable banquettes, a standing rail, and bar seating. Although there will be a full bar, Artale has her sights zeroed in on low-alcohol beverages like amaro-based spritzes, which will go well beyond the ubiquitous Aperol and Campari. Additionally, there will Italian beer and wine on hand.

“Given the transitional hour of the day and type of place, I wanted something where you could sit down, have a light drink, but still keep working or go onto your evening at the game, or show, or to have a full dinner.”

To match the aesthetic, chef David Kocab is crafting a farm-to-table Italian menu that will lean light, wholesome, seasonal and creative.

“I want to fill that middle void where you can get quality without having to be heavy-handed,” he explains.

In the morning, guests can pair their Ready Set! cappuccino with “healthy but substantial” breakfast options. Midday options will focus on composed salads, sandwiches, and seasonal small plates. To pair with those spritzes, Kocab will offer bar snacks, sharable plates and a few specials. The café will also offer grab-and-go items to pair with a retail bottle of wine for a light bite at home or elsewhere.

Artale, who returned home to Northeast Ohio after years spent working in New York, says that she refined her lifelong restaurant vision post-2020. With more remote and virtual workers and fewer 9-to-5, work-in-a-building staffers, the shift to more flexible work/social spaces like Patron Saint made sense – especially in a neighborhood like Hingetown.

“I’ve always wanted to open a restaurant,” says Artale. “It has been my dream my entire life. So I’m doing the cliché of living the dream.”

Popular Kakaako cafe hopes releasing surveillance footage will help catch burglar - Hawaii News Now

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Cafe Villamor, a popular Kakaako coffee shop, is seeking help from the public to catch a burglar who broke into the establishment early Sunday.

The incident was captured on security footage, which shows the burglar taking a lockbox, register, and deposit box.

Although the footage does not show the burglar’s face, the cafe’s owners are hoping someone will recognize the thief and come forward with information.

“It’s really unfortunate that we’re kind of in a situation where someone felt the need to break in and take some of this stuff. But the outpouring of support from our community that we built out has been amazing,” said Cafe Villamor’s owner Gabriel Yanagihara.

In an effort to make up for their losses, the cafe has set up a GoFundMe page, and they’re promising to invite anyone who donates to a private event for a night of community, fun, coffee, and celebration.

The GoFundMe has raised nearly $6,000 for Cafe Villamor so far.

Anyone with information about the burglary is encouraged to contact the Honolulu police department or CrimeStoppers.
