Revival Market closes, makes way for Louisiana-inspired cafe - Chron

Revival Market's story has officially come to an end. Agricole Hospitality's operators Morgan Weber, Ryan Pera and Vincent Huynh announced last week that they would not be renewing the lease for the Heights craft butcher shop and cafe. Its last day was July 31, but today, a new chapter begins.

Layne Cruz, Revival's general manager for the last five years and a member of Agricole's team since 2014, has stepped in to take over the space, opening the Louisiana-inspired Lagniappe Kitchen & Bar in the coming weeks.

"Layne sat down with me in January, and we talked about the future and her goals. She said she always wanted to open her own restaurant," said Weber. "We were approaching the end of Revival's lease, so that's when the seed was planted."

The restaurateur attributes changes in the neighborhood since Revival opened its doors in 2011 as part of the reason he and his partners decided to close the shop. "At that time, there wasn't a specialty grocery store in the Heights at all," recalled Weber. "Since we opened, Whole Foods, two giant H-E-B stores, a Sprouts market, and two massive Kroger stores have opened nearby."

For more than a decade, they pivoted to keep up with the changing neighborhood. "We were one of very few coffee shops in the Heights then, now there are like eight," he said. "We felt like Revival had run its course."

It took six months to change hands with the building's current landlord. Now that the transition has been made, Cruz has begun renovations to add her own personal touch to the existing space and bring Lagniappe Kitchen & Bar to fruition. "She's been one of the most incredible human beings in our company for years," said Weber. "It was amazing to see her want to step into that role."

Weber hints that Cruz has a whole new menu in the works. While eager Houstonians will have to wait until renovations are complete to venture in for a meal, they can get an advanced taste of her premium coffee program, which is being offered daily from 7 to 10 a.m. beginning Aug. 1. Interesting choices like the New Orleans iced mocha, crafted with a housemade 20-hour cold brew, chicory, mocha and milk, plus trusty standbys like Vietnamese iced coffee and chai lattes await.

Revival regulars will likely find comfort in seeing some familiar faces at Lagniappe. "The staff was more fiercely loyal to Cruz than Agricole," Weber laughed. "Most, if not all, are staying with her."

Agricole Hospitality won't be one concept short for too long. According to Weber, the opening of EZ's Liquor Lounge, a dive bar in partnership with Pappas Restaurants' Matt Tanner, will open on White Oak Drive near the group's Coltivare restaurant in September.

BANGKOK, Aug 1 (Reuters) - The RG420 cannabis cafe opened just four days ago in Khao San, an area of Bangkok popular with backpackers - and already it's crammed with customers.

Several such outlets have sprung up across the capital since Thailand decriminalised the plant in June, a few weeks before it dropped COVID-linked controls on foreign visitors.

Foreign arrivals shrank to 2 million in the first half of 2022 from nearly 40 million in 2019, and RG420's owner Ong-ard Panyachatiraksa and others like him view their cafes as central to efforts to revive a tourism industry that contributed about 12% to GDP before the pandemic struck.

He said hundreds have been visiting the cafe every day, and he plans to open others.

"Europeans, Japanese, Americans – they are looking for Thai sativa," Ong-ard told Reuters, referring to a cannabis strain. "Cannabis and tourism are a match."

Not everyone agrees.

In 2018, Thailand became the first Southeast Asian country to legalise marijuana for medical use. In June, the entire cannabis plant was decriminalised. read more

That has led to an explosion in its recreational use, something that government officials - concerned about negative effects on health and productivity often linked to uncontrolled use of the drug - have retropectively tried to discourage.

"The law does not cover recreational cannabis use... and so tourism promotion is focused on medical (aspects)," the national tourism authority's Deputy Governor, Siripakorn Cheawsamoot, said.

The pushback against the way the new policy is being interpreted has caused some confusion, with authorities resorting to issuing piecemeal regulations such banning public smoking of cannabis and its sale to under 20s.

A parliamentary committee is now debating a bill to regulate cannabis use that is expected to finalise in September and could impact the cannabis cafes. read more

Akira Wongwan, a medical cannabis entrepreneur and one of the committee's advisers, said she expected recreational use to be subject to zoning laws.

Meanwhile, in the crowded smoking room at RG420 - a reference to Rag Gan, a Thai expression meaning "love each other" - Briton Malik Khan has just finished rolling a joint.

"This country is beautiful, and there's so much to do here as well," the 26-year-old said. "It (cannabis) adds to the scene really nicely."
