Russian pro-war military blogger killed in blast at St Petersburg cafe - The Guardian

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

A prominent pro-war Russian military blogger has been killed in a blast in a cafe in central St Petersburg, Russia’s interior ministry said in a statement.

Vladlen Tatarsky, whose real name was Maxim Fomin, had more than 560,000 followers on Telegram and was one of the country’s most influential military bloggers.

The interior ministry said 19 people were injured in the blast on Sunday. Citing sources in the country’s security agencies, the RIA news outlet said a bomb was hidden in a statue presented to Tatarsky in a box as a gift. There was no indication of who was responsible.

Videos posted on social media show an explosion and injured people on the street.

Tatarsky was among the attendees at a Kremlin ceremony last September where Vladimir Putin proclaimed Russia’s annexation of four partly occupied regions of Ukraine, a move widely condemned by the international community.

“We’ll conquer everyone, we’ll kill everyone, we’ll loot whoever we need to, and everything will be just as we like it,” Tatarsky said in a video message recorded at the ceremony.

The blogger, who frequently travelled with Russian troops on the frontlines, emerged as one of the loudest critics of Russia’s defence ministry over the last year for its inability to achieve military gains in Ukraine.

In one instance he called for a tribunal for the Russian military leadership, describing Moscow’s top officers as “untrained idiots”.

Tatarsky was one of the leading voices in the pro-war blogger community. The bloggers, who are frequently former veterans with contacts on the frontlines, often provide a rare insight into Russia’s real performance on the ground and are allowed a surprising amount of leeway to criticise the conduct of the war – although they rarely criticise Putin. In a sign of their growing importance, the Russian president last year established a taskforce to coordinate work between the government and the bloggers.

If Tatarsky was deliberately targeted, his death will be the second killing on Russian territory of a prominent pro-war figure.

Last August, Darya Dugina, the daughter of an ultra-nationalist Russian ideologue, was killed when a bomb blew up the Toyota Land Cruiser she was driving. Russia has accused Ukraine’s intelligence services of carrying out the killing but Ukraine denies involvement.

NWI Business Ins and Outs: Gelsosomo's Pizzeria, Rosina's Meatball Cafe, coffee shop, nail salon and Luke Oil ... - The Times of Northwest Indiana

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

Gelsosomo's, one of the biggest names in Region pizza, has expanded to downtown Griffith.

The purveyor of tavern-style square-cut pizza opened at 106 N. Broad St. at the busy corner of Main and Broad streets in Griffith. It carved out half the former Twincade space where True BBQ, the upscale barbecue restaurant with locations in Munster and Crown Point, also opened.

Gelsosomo's started in Portage in 1979 and has since spread to 10 restaurants, including in Chesterton, Valparaiso, Michigan City, Crown Point, Schererville and St. Joseph, Michigan. It also has pizzerias in Lemont and Macomb in Illinois.

Founder Tom Gelsosomo hails from an Italian family in the Roseland neighborhood, at one time an Italian enclave on Chicago's far South Side. He cut his teeth working in restaurants in the 1970s and decided to launch his own pizzeria in Portage at a time when the city was experiencing rapid population growth.

Gelsosomo's Pizza grew into an institution that was named the best-tasting pizza in Porter County in 1989 and the best-tasting pizza in Northwest Indiana in 1991. It's supported churches, unions, nonprofits and youth sports like Little League and basketball. It started franchising in 1990, first expanding to Chesterton and then to the Innman's Recreation Center in Valparaiso before it opened a full-service restaurant there.

Gelsosomo's continued to grow, converting a train depot at the historical Silver Beach in St. Joseph into a Gelsosomo's in 2005.

It serves calzones, Italian beef sandwiches, ribs, salads like an Italian antipasto salad and pasta like mostaccioli and fettuccini alfredo. Pizza options include seven-cheese, calabrese, veggie, Buffalo chicken, BBQ chicken, BLT, Mediterranean and hot & spicy with meatballs, Italian beef, pepperoncini, Ortega peppers and hot giardiniera.

The Popeye Pizza features fresh spinach, while the works is loaded with sausage, pepperoni, ham, mushrooms, green peppers and mozzarella. The pizzas range from 10 inches in circumference for a small to 15 inches in circumference for a large.

The extensive appetizer list includes Buffalo fried zucchini, fried mushrooms, fried pickle chips, fried cheese ravioli, garlic bread, spinach and artichoke dip, Tommy G's Garlic Cheese Loaf, Tommy G's Link Sausage and Meatballs and — as almost goes without saying — the wings that pizzeria owners say now make up a huge chunk of the delivery business.

Gelsosomo's Pizzeria in Griffith offers dine-in for lunch and dinner, as well as takeout, delivery and online ordering.

It joins a crowded pizza scene in downtown Griffith that also includes longtime staples Squigi's Pizza of Griffith, John's Pizzeria Restaurant, T D's Express Pizza, Villa Pizza and Bridge's Scoreboard.

Gelsosomo's is open 3-10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 3-9 p.m. Sunday.

For more information, visit gelsgriffith.com or call 219-356-0220.

Rosina's Meatball Cafe is now serving up a wide variety of meatballs in downtown Griffith.

The new restaurant makes fresh batches of meatballs daily and stays open until it runs out. Options include traditional beef, spicy Italian sausage, a combination of beef and spicy Italian sausage, gluten-free chicken and vegetarian mushroom-and-rice meatballs.

They come in customizable bowls with a choice of meatball type, sauce and base. One can choose among thick red sauce, meat sauce, cheddar cheese sauce, tangy bbq sauce and mushroom gravy atop a bed of penne pasta, jasmine rice or white cheddar mashed potatoes. Add-ons for a little extra include pepperoni, pepperoncini, cheese, bacon crumbles, banana peppers and fresh or sauteed onions, mushrooms and peppers.

Sandwich options include meatball paninis, meatball slider flights and, of course, meatball subs, as well as a couple of other Italian options.

Rosina's Meatball Cafe also serves up soups, salads and sides like broccoli, bruschetta and mac and cheese.

Dawn Ayers-Jania and her husband Geoff Jania opened the restaurant using old family recipes handed down from her great-grandmother Rosina. She hailed from Calabria in Italy, immigrated to New York and dreamed of someday opening her own restaurant.

It's a small quick-serve restaurant that offers carryout and seats about 18 to 20 customers inside. An outdoor patio out back will be added later this year.

Rosina's Meatball Cafe is located at 126 N. Griffith Boulevard, across the street from Bridge's Scoreboard and next to the SerenDIPity ice cream parlor, which is unmissable because of the huge Instagrammable bench featuring colorful ice cream cones.

Ayers-Jania, a Michigan native, decided to open her own restaurant due to all the praise she got for her cooking over the years. People frequently praised the meatballs she made with recipes that had been passed down for generations and she hopes the unique focus will make the place a draw.

Rosina's Meatball Cafe is open from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Refuge Coffee, which just opened in the former Pop's/Taco Bell on Main Street in Crown Point, plans to expand to St. John later this year.

Jotam Torres and his wife Chelsey Torres, a trained French pastry chef, previously owned Cafe Lacuna in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood. The Puerto Rican couple relocated from Hyde Park to Northwest Indiana a few years ago partly due to the Spanish immersion program for their children at Crown Point Christian school.

The cafe has a full espresso bar, a range of coffee drinks, tea lattes and food like a lox sandwich, a rotisserie chicken sandwich and a pizza bagel. It raises its own chickens and makes its food at a commissary in Highland.

"We're people-focused," Jotam Torres said. "We love people and serving guests. We've been on the other side of the bar. We have clean bathrooms and skilled baristas who move quickly. You know where our ingredients come from. Nothing we make is simple. We make stuff traditionally, make stuff fresh and make stuff very intentionally."

Refuge Coffee also tries to take care of its employees.

"We try to offer a long-term career," he said. "We want employees to learn and stay with us indefinitely as we grow in our enterprise. We want to help them become leaders. We promote from within."

Refuge Coffee aims to offer its customers a fair deal, like 12 ounces of iced coffee as promised instead of a cup filled with ice, Torres said. It also aims to encourage hanging out by having comforting, nostalgic decor like the wallpaper one would see in one's grandmother's house as a kid.

The coffee shop is working to open a second location on U.S. 41 in St. John, where it's been negotiating a lease at a spot near the new Wendy's restaurant.

"We look to offer an awesome experience," he said. "Our prices are competitive, either cheaper or the same as Starbucks and Dunkin. We want to see you five times a week. We want to be part of your lifestyle."

Luke Oil, one of the biggest gas station chains in the Region, has opened a new location in the heart of Valparaiso.

Hobart-based Luke Builds LLC built a new 3,520-square-foot gas station and convenience store at 815 Lincolnway, east of downtown Valpo.

The construction cost an estimated $545,846, according to a city of Valparaiso building permit.

The gas station is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Phantom Fireworks in Highland is temporarily closed after a fire last weekend.

The roof caught on fire at the fireworks store at 8843 Indianapolis Blvd.

The chain claims to be one of the largest fireworks retailers in the state. It also has locations in Merrillville, Burns Harbor and South Bend.

Inside Prada’s Uber-Stylish Pop-Up Cafe in Harrods’ London Megastore - Robb Report

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

Fancy a taste of Milan in London? Prada can help.

The Italian fashion house just opened a chic new pop-up cafe in Harrods department store. Prada Caffé, which will be open until the end of 2023, was inspired by Prada’s first boutique in Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II arcade and takes design cues from the brand’s international flagships.

The sophisticated interior is awash with Prada’s mint-green hue, save for the black-and-white checkered floors that mirror the label’s signature monochromatic designs. Velvet chairs in a slightly different shade of pale green sit by sleek black tables, while statement lights hang from the ceiling. There are also gorgeous floral bas-reliefs adorning the walls.

The tableware has been handpicked by Prada’s design team, naturally. Each piece compliments the cafe’s “serene environment,” according to Harrods. Highlights include the pale-blue Japanese porcelain dishes inspired by ancient Celadon pottery and the crystal glasses emblazoned with the iconic Prada triangle motif.

But what’s on the menu? A modern take on Italian food and beverages, of course. For breakfast, the cafe serves up Italian coffee and a doughy treat known as faggotini that comes stuffed with gooey dark chocolate, pistachio cream, and raspberry jam. Dishes like yogurt and granola, eggs florentine, and caviar are also offered from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The lunch menu offers starters and mains ranging from burrata and zucchini to ricotta cannelloni with black truffle.

Quick bites such as dainty Italian finger sandwiches and mini pizzas will also be available to shoppers on the go, along with a number of delicious cakes and pastries. Think hazelnut cake, tiramisu, and a variety of sponges. In addition to coffee, the cafe slings wines hailing from Piedmont to Sicily, as well as signature cocktails with quirky names like Tuscan Blossom, Mediterraneo, Italian Fizz, and Bitter in Love.

This isn’t Prada’s first culinary endeavor, of course. The house acquired a storied Milanese pastry shop in 2014 and opened the West Anderson-designed Bar Luce in the city in 2015.

Ready for a Prada tea party? Reservations can be made via Harrods.

Easter Grab n' Go returns to Knead Community Cafe - TribLIVE

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

During the few hours of clear skies on Saturday, families stopped by Knead Community Cafe in New Kensington to pick up a free lunch, coloring books, journals and other treats at the Easter Grab n’ Go.

Six-year-old Hunter Karafa took a moment to sort through this bag of goodies — candy, bubble gum, pencils and crayons. His sister Hannah, 8, noticed the bookmark.

“Oh, I need bookmarks,” she said. “I have too many books.”

This is the second year of the event, which is meant to encourage kids to read, said Lillie Leonardi, founder of Books Build Bridges, a New Kensington-based nonprofit that launched in 2017. She also runs the affiliated literary services and audio production business Passages & Prose.

In 2021, Books Bridge Hope started the “Box of Goodness” project. The goal was to collect books, journals, writing supplies, gloves, hats, socks and other items for people without homes. Books Bridge Hope works with organizations like the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and UPMC Mercy’s Operation Safety Net to distribute the boxes to people in need. The organization also collects backpacks for schoolchildren.

For Jessica Preves-Taranovsy, the event was a chance to get her kids, nieces and nephews some sunshine. She said they often go to the summer movies and grab-and-go dinners that are sponsored by the cafe.

“I want to get them to play outside and get some fresh air before the storms come in,” she said.

Christian Fyke, general manager, said Knead made 100 bagged lunches for the kids. Any extra lunches would be donated to a senior high rise in town.

“We were able to provide the space, but they really led the charge with how it’s done and bringing the kids. From our end, we provided the meal, a separate bagged lunch with a turkey sandwich.”

“We do what we can to be part of a vibrant community,” he said. Knead is a pay-what-you-can restaurant that opened near Barnes and 10th Street in 2017.

Other supporters of the Easter event were the Alle-Kiski Hope Center, Child Health Association of Sewickley, Cribs for Kids, Cuddles for Kids, Penn State New Kensington, The Corner, The Digital Foundry, the Salvation Army of New Kensington, Westmoreland Community Action, The Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern Pennsylvania and WQED.

Jada Powell, who is Leonardi’s granddaughter, brought along her two children 9-month-old Milani and 2-year-old Malcolm, who was giggling and zipping through the grass.

“This is something for kids and for our community,” Powell said. “It’s to bring our community closer together.”

Michigan’s Best Local Eats: Trackside Cafe in Flushing offers tasty homemade pies - MLive.com

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

FLUSHING, MI - A new breakfast and lunch diner recently opened in Flushing, filling a void in the city.

Trackside Café took over for the former Choo-Choo’s Diner, located near the railroad tracks on 424 Emily St.

It is operated by the owners of the Lennon Café in Lennon, offering homemade meals, soups, sandwiches, breakfast and pies.

“It’s a lot like Lennon Café, but we only have a breakfast and lunch menu, so it’s a smaller menu,” said owner Tammy Putnam, who opened Trackside Café on Feb. 21. “It has its own identity.”

After 32 years in business, Choo-Choo’s Diner closed its doors in December after owner William Angst retired.

With concerns of what would replace the establishment, it was important for the next business to offer a dining option at the same location.

“Some people in town were really upset and they wanted a family sit-down restaurant,” Putnam said. “They were afraid of losing that in their community.”

Along with business partner Bill Howard, Trackside Café was born, naming it after the railroad tracks nearby.

Everything from eggs, pancakes, omelets, breakfast sandwiches, burgers, steak, and chicken are offered, but Putnam’s homemade pies is what customers are blown away by upon eating.

“I do make my homemade crust and a lot of restaurants don’t do that anymore because it’s time consuming,” she said. “My mom always made my pies for me at Lennon Café and at the restaurant I owned previously. And when she passed away, I just wanted to carry on her tradition of homemade pies.

“It’s something I will never change because it reflects my mom and everything she taught me.”

Putnam’s pecan cream pie is the biggest seller, and she also makes a chocolate covered cherry pie, mint Oreo pie, blueberry cream, banana and raspberry pies.

As a business owner for over 27 years, Putnam has seen it all within the restaurant industry, and so far business has been booming for Trackside Café.

“We have met a lot of nice people and are already becoming friends and family,” she said. “It’s becoming a great adventure.”

Follow Trackside Café on Facebook.
