Divisadero Bar Horsefeather Opens for Afternoon Cafe Service with Coffee, Cocktails, and Food - Eater SF

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

Not all coffee purveyors want you to get in and get out as quickly as you can, it seems. Certainly not the team at Divisadero Street’s Horsefeather, a vibey atrium cocktail destination since 2016. The bar launched an afternoon cafe addition to its offerings a few weeks ago and officially opened for a coffee and snacks service from 2 to 5 p.m. on May 31. “The NoPa-Divisadero corridor has a ton of offerings for remote work and cafes,” bar manager Michelle Giroux says. “Horsefeather is trying to create a different kind of space that offers our full cocktail menu, cafe snacks, and a workspace.”

That means complimentary Wi-Fi and outlets, increasingly rare in San Francisco’s cafe scene. Giroux would know: She’s worked in coffee since moving to the Bay Area in 2014, culminating in her role on the opening team of Verve Coffee’s first — and most beautiful — San Francisco shop on the corners of Church and Market streets. At Horsefeather, she’s opting for Linea Coffee as the roaster, another company she worked for as a barista, retail manager, and wholesale manager. There’s no espresso machine at the bar, so offerings include standard cold brew and hot drip coffee, at a respectful $5 and $4 respectively.

But more up Horsefeather’s alley are the coffee cocktails and decadent new dishes. There are three drinks and three dishes, and nothing over $11 on either side. There’s the Shakerato featuring Linea’s espresso roast and pineapple cordial as well as a cold brew tonic highlighting Q Indian Tonic and mint. The boozy option of the three is the Nine in the Afternoon, a symphony of cold brew, sherry, Cappelletti, and Swedish punsch, a type of alcohol popular in Sweden and Finland.

On the food end of things, the crispy mochi are already a hit, Giroux says, slathered in coconut milk and matcha cream. There are also fermented chili deviled eggs and toast with herbed butter on neighbor Josey Baker’s oatmeal sourdough. Owner Justin Lew’s Asian American heritage has played a major part in Horsefeather’s food and drink menus over the last seven years, and this menu is no exception. But truly the star of the show at this newest venture from the sleek bar is the coffee, and merely the chance to experience cafe culture in a city rocked by COVID in a new, clever way. “I wanted to accentuate the coffee in a way different than what people are used to,” Giroux says.

Horsefeather is now open for cafe service from 2 to 5 p.m. at 528 Divisadero Street.

Animal rights foundation president calls 'Bunny Cafe' a 'torture chamber' - CBS Los Angeles

Animal rights organization calls pop-up 'Bunny Cafe' a 'torture chamber'

Animal rights organization calls pop-up 'Bunny Cafe' a 'torture chamber' 02:29

A café where you can dine with some furry friends has sparked controversy with an animal rights organization after their president claims the owner is exploiting bunnies for money.

"No matter how much you polish it, it is still a torture chamber for animals who are frozen from fear," said Lejla Hadzimurtovic, president of the Bunny World Foundation.

The café is one of the "interactive customer experiences" created by JoyGrab. The company's founder, 23-year-old Kevin Grushkovski, said the rabbit-filled pop-up coffee shop is one of his first concepts. He charges people $25 an hour to enjoy the company of their furry companions.

"They can get drinks, coffee and tea and they're able to pet the bunnies," said Grushkovski. "The goal of the event is to educate people about bunny adoption and to find many bunnies homes."

He said that thousands of people have visited the shop and 10 of the bunnies have been adopted, which were rescues from Los Angeles animal shelters. However, organizations like Hadzimurtovic's and the Los Angeles Rabbit Foundation.

"This isn't about him. It's not," said Michelle Kelly, president of the Los Angeles Rabbit Foundation. "It's about the rabbits. He has to find some way to make money that doesn't exploit the rabbits."

L.A. Animal Services said it is monitoring the café and investigated the allegations. A pet shop permit was approved and it was last inspected a week ago.

Grushkovski said that none of the bunnies have been harmed or died. He hopes to expand his bunny café concept into art shows and free community movie nights.

Dutch-Way Cafe brings Amish food to Fort Myers - Gulfshore Business

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

Pennsylvania native Jay Case grew up in the Lancaster area, which has the largest Amish community in the U.S. After living in Florida for 12 years, he figured he wasn’t the only one missing the food he grew up with, or better yet, he could introduce his favorite recipes to those who’ve never tried it.

Having both Amish and Mennonite backgrounds from his grandparents, all recipes used at Case’s new Dutch-Way Cafe, 2245 Winkler Ave., in Fort Myers have been passed down through generations.

“My parents are both here working with me to help make all the food from scratch with all the original recipes from my great grandmother and my great, great grandmother,” Case said.

Dutch-Way Cafe opened in Fort MyersAmish baked goods have already been a hit at the cafe with the whoopie pie, which is two round mound-shaped pieces of cake with a sweet, creamy filling between them, taking center stage. The cafe sells both chocolate and red velvet whoopie pies, two for $3.

Case also recommends the raisin and walnut sticky buns or a slice of shoofly pie made with sweet molasses.

Breakfast and lunch options offer some familiarity, but with a few differences that make the dishes authentic to Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine. The breakfast platters come with potato cakes instead of the typical hashbrown. “It’s literally cakes that are made out of mashed potatoes with seasoning and onions and it’s grilled, so it becomes crispy but still soft,” Case said.

Dutch-Way Cafe opened in Fort MyersThe lunch options are all handhelds served with the cafe’s in-house made potato chips. Case recommends the Dutch-Way Classic, featuring sweet Lebanon bologna. “It’s a sandwich I’m used to getting up [in Pennsylvania] but never found anywhere down here except for the Yoder’s [Restaurant & Amish Village] up in Sarasota,” he said.

Other lunch options that are unlike the typical local offerings are the fried bologna sandwich and The Lancaster, which has creamy cucumber dill sauce along with bacon, Muenster cheese, lettuce and tomato.

“It’s what Americans would consider a BLT, but it’s their version of a BLT on a pretzel roll,” Case said.

The breakfast and lunch options range from $4 to $10. Breakfast begins at 8 a.m. and lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., with both ending at 3 p.m.

Starting at 3 p.m., The Rumspringa Bar at the cafe opens until the 10 p.m. closing time, which differs on weekends. There will still be food offered from Pennsylvania Dutch, but more geared toward evening bites during that time.

The 4,800-square-foot cafe has 183 seats, including the outdoor patio. There is also a banquet room, soon to be blocked off with partitions instead of curtains, that will be used for meetings and private events.

The cafe is set up for patrons to order food at the front counter and be seated wherever they choose.

“You will still be attended to, and we will still make sure that you get what you want and be there to talk to you, but you’re not rushed,” Case said. “You don’t always have somebody hovering over you. It’s more of a relaxed environment.”

Dutch-Way Cafe opened in Fort MyersCase plans to have a pianist come in to keep the environment relaxed, with Fridays expected to have live entertainment.

The cafe is open Tuesday through Sunday, next to the Luxe 8 Flix Cinema.

“I’m kind of nervous, but I’m really excited at the same time,” Case said. “It’s a new concept, and I’m in a space that has been a lot of different things over the years. It is a cafe. It is for family, friends, it’s for everybody. We’re making things from scratch. We are using old, time-tested recipes and I’m just excited to share the food with everybody whether they’ve had it before or not had it before. It’s here to come try.”

Learn what changes Magpie Cafe’s new owners are planning - Greater Baton Rouge Business Report

takanadalagi.blogspot.com
Kyle and Taylor Wilkinson, the new owners of Magpie Cafe (Oscar Tickle)

With one sip of Magpie Cafe‘s black coffee, Kyle Wilkinson had found his new favorite coffee shop.

It was 2012, shortly after the cafe first opened on Perkins Road. Later, he brought his now-wife, Taylor, on their first date there.

“You could say we fell in love with Magpie at the same time we were falling for each other,” Wilkinson says. Their relationship with each other and the cafe’s owners, James and Lina Jacobs, grew so much that the couple held their wedding at the Jacobses’ house.

Now, the Wilkinsons embark on a new adventure: taking over ownership of the cafe following the Jacobses’ May 26 Facebook announcement of the cafe’s sale.

The Wilkinsons say they plan on changing “some” aspects of the cafe while keeping it “largely the same.” Kyle adds, “We want Baton Rouge to know we have something for every day.”

These changes include adding more savory menu items and staying open on Mondays. They also plan to bring back weekend brunches.

The Jacobses first opened Magpie Cafe on Perkins Road over a decade ago. As the years passed, however, their eyes began wandering from Magpie—and Baton Rouge. They wanted to experience the world, and in November of 2022, they made the move to Hawaii.

In the following months, they tried to manage their company from afar. The five-hour time difference made attempts at virtual connection challenging, and they struggled with being absent owners.

So, when it came time to look for new owners they knew exactly whom to call. Kyle has learned about running a food business from operating a Jimmy John’s location up the street.

The Wilkinsons jumped at the opportunity to run the place they had grown so fond of.

An All-Day Cafe With an Intimate Cocktail Bar in Back Is Opening at Star Metals - Eater Atlanta

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

Momonoki and Brush Sushi owners chef Jason Liang and John Chen are opening a bar at Star Metals this winter offering cocktails and cocktail omakases, pastries and coffee, and an all-day menu to include Taiwanese fried chicken sandwiches.

Located beside sushi restaurant Hayakawa at Star Metals, Lucky Star will be divided into two distinct spaces — an all-day cafe and bar in the front, with an evening cocktail spot pouring drinks in back.

The front portion of Lucky Star will open in the morning for coffee and pastries from baker ChingYao Wang, reminiscent of Liang and Chen’s Midtown coffee shop Momo Cafe. It then transitions around 11 a.m. to serving Taiwanese fried chicken sandwiches and street snacks, like deep-fried sweet potato fries with palm seasoning. Look for draft cocktails, a tight list of beer and wine, and a regular happy hour.

The back bar at Lucky Star is meant to be an intimate experience and reservation-only, where people can order everything from Southern takes on cocktails like the New York sour and a shiso gin and tonic to culinary-inspired drinks such as a tomato martini and a mapo tofu cocktail similar to a Ramos Gin Fizz mixed with peppercorn syrup and soy milk. The bar will also offer a nightly cocktail omakase service with food pairings from Liang.

Liang and Chen tapped Atlanta bartender and Giving Kitchen systems and impact manager Kirk Gibson to oversee the bar program at Lucky Star. Regulars to the Pinewood in Decatur, Cardinal at the Beacon in Grant Park, and his Candler Park speakeasy pop-ups with Eat Me Speak Me are likely familiar with Gibson’s cocktail prowess. Gibson recently added certified sommelier to his titles.

“We’ve been toying with the cocktail omakase idea, as it was something I did with Jeff Banks and Bradford Tolleson at Brush. It allowed us to play with flavors and portions,” Gibson says. “I want the bartenders here to flex that creative muscle and have fun with the drinks. It’s what I always loved about the [cocktail] omakase at Brush and looked forward to doing with the cocktails at the Eat Me Speak Me pop-ups.”

Liang says the all-day food menu will be available at both the front and back bars at Lucky Star. This includes three Taiwanese fried chicken sandwich flavors and other Taiwanese-style street snacks. However, the back bar could see some type of caviar service added to the food menu.

“West Midtown was our very first choice for Brush before opening in Decatur, but there wasn’t any space available back then,” Liang says of opening at Star Metals. “We’ve been following what’s happening in the area for a while, and this opportunity to do more than just Momo Cafe showed up. That’s when we pitched the idea [for Lucky Star] to Kirk to help us create something different than just another coffee shop.”

Lucky Star joins Sweetgreen, Wagamama, Hayakawa, Prevail Coffee, and Flight Club already open at Star Metals. Rooftop bar and lounge Patina, from the team behind the Painted Pin and the Painted Duck, should open by the end of 2023, and a location of seafood restaurant Fishmonger opens soon in the former La Fonda building next door to Star Metals. Fishmonger is temporarily taking over the space for two years ahead of its eventual move to the newest phase of Star Metals. The property on which the building currently resides is set to become an apartment tower called Stella at Star Metals at the corner of 11th Street and Howell Mill Road.

The next year is shaping up to be very busy for Liang and Chen in terms of restaurant openings. In 2022, the partners closed Brush Sushi in Decatur and replaced it with the laidback neighborhood sushi restaurant Cuddlefish. A second location of Cuddlefish opens next year at the emerging High Street development in Dunwoody.

As for Brush Sushi, Liang and Chen are reopening the restaurant later this summer at Buckhead Village. Taking over the former American Cut space, Brush Sushi at Buckhead Village will feature an upscale, modern design befitting the luxury dining and retail district, complete with large wooden panels with intricate carvings of hinoki (a Japanese cypress tree) and a private room seating 17 people offering omakase tastings from Liang. The Buckhead location will also serve a variety of grilled dishes cooked over Binchotan charcoal, as well as some of the most popular a la carte dishes from Brush in Decatur.
