The IronPigs have announced this season’s theme nights. Here are the 11 weirdest ones. - lehighvalleylive.com

This is the same organization that made headlines a few years ago by holding a promotion awarding one “lucky” fan with free funeral services upon that fan’s death.

So “weird” is a relative term when it comes to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

The Philadelphia Phillies Triple-A affiliate, which plays home games at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, is unquestionably one of the most popular minor-league teams in baseball. Attendance at Coca-Cola Park was 585,110 in 2019, the third highest among International League teams. But some would argue its popularity stems from more than just the quality of play on the field. In our opinion (and there’s obviously a little hometown bias here), the IronPigs are unquestionably No. 1 in terms of holding theme nights and promotions that can pique the interest of folks who wouldn’t know a catcher’s mitt from an oven mitt.

The IronPigs this month put out its preliminary promotion schedule for the 2020 season. There’s something special going on at Coca-Cola Park during every home game this year, per the schedule, but not all promotions are created equal in terms of weirdness. Sure, there are plenty of bobblehead giveaways and fireworks displays planned. And you can find out about when those are happening through the complete schedule here. We’re choosing to instead look at the… er… really special promotions that are coming. The best ones, in our opinion, tap into pop culture and have no obvious parallels to the game of baseball. Below are 11 picks that meet this criteria.

6:35 p.m. Saturday, April 18: “Parks & Rec” Night will feature an appearance by comedian Jim O’Heir, who played Jerry Gergich on the popular NBC sitcom.

7:05 p.m. Tuesday, April 21: “Tyler’s Amazing Balancing Act” will be on hand. Billed as the “most booked halftime act in college basketball from 2017-19, Tyler Scheuer balances “wheelbarrows, bikes, ladders, and much more on my face while at the same time dancing to music and engaging the crowd,” per his website.

7:05 p.m., Wednesday, April 22: “The Office” Night will feature an appearance by actor Brian Baumgartner, who played Kevin Malone on the hit NBC sitcom.

7:05 p.m. Friday, May 1: “Star Wars” Night is the first of three theme nights for movies that have wide appeal among single men in their 40s who are still living in their parents’ basement.

7:05 p.m. Wednesday, May 13: “Karate Kid” Night

6:35 p.m. Saturday, May 23: “Ghostbusters” Night

6:35 p.m. Saturday, June 6: Fastnachts Night. Fastnachts Day was actually Tuesday, as in Feb. 25, but who cares. Fried dough tastes just as good in June.

1:35 p.m. Sunday, June 28: Postgame Food Fight and poncho giveaway. We haven’t heard the specifics on this yet, but there are those who would say a “food fight” is a distasteful promotion given the number of starving people in this world. They’d be correct in that assessment, but we’ll give the IronPigs a pass because the organization does a tremendous amount of charity work.

6:35 p.m. Saturday, July 18: Witches & Wizards Night

6:35 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1: “Shark Week” Celebration

7:05 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11: Dodgeball Night

For those who want to partake, note that single-game tickets for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs went on sale Feb. 10. They’re available online only here until the IronPigs’ National Pig Day celebration to be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 6. For the uninitiated, that’s essentially a party held at Coca-Cola Park to coincide with the start of walk-up ticket sales. The IronPigs’ first home game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Friday, April 17 against Pawtucket.
