Coronavirus is here in New York: Keep calm and wash those hands! - New York Post

COVID-19 has arrived in New York. No one should be surprised — or panicked.

“We said early on it wasn’t a question of if but when,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo noted Monday. “This is New York, we’re a gateway to the world.”

More important, as he and Mayor Bill de Blasio agreed at their press conference on the state’s first confirmed case, a 39-year-old Manhattan woman now quarantined at home after testing positive upon her return from Iran, “we have the best health-care system on the planet right here in New York. The gov and mayor showed they’re handling the situation fine as they followed the president’s lead, calling for calm and explaining how government at every level has been preparing for all possibilities for weeks.

“It is deep-breath time,” Cuomo said of the coronavirus’ New York arrival. “This is not our first rodeo with this type of situation in New York.”

More good news: The feds agreed to let New York do its own testing — “And as New Yorkers, we like control,” Cuomo chuckled. Indeed, the system will be up and running almost immediately. So the gov’s less-combative relationship with President Trump seems to be paying off: Now we’ll be able to confirm cases in hours, not days.

New York will surely see more cases and may even endure an outbreak or two — but (in all but the most unlikely scenarios) not more than it can handle. The Legislature is working to authorize $40 million in emergency funding, and Congress will be providing billions nationwide.

Every day brings more information. And that information gives us “more reason to stay calm and go about our lives,” as de Blasio put it. “It’s not something you get from casual contact, it’s prolonged exposure with another person that has it.”

The economic impact is another question: If Monday’s Wall Street rally doesn’t hold, a prolonged stock market slump and/or a national economic slowdown would mean big trouble for both the state and city budgets.

But New York and the nation are clearly going to handle COVID-19 far better than China did. So keep calm — and keep washing your hands.
