Longtime Wilmington cafe Sugarfoot has closed its doors - The News Journal

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

Sugarfoot Fine Foods, a longtime Wilmington cafe featuring "West Coast-themed" homemade soups, salads and sandwiches, has closed its doors after 21 years in business.

The announcement was made Thursday afternoon on its Facebook page.

Owner Anne Day, who has operated the business since 1999, said the cafe in Wilmington's The Devon condo building off Pennsylvania Avenue was closing its doors permanently. A reason was not given.

Cafe closings: De La Coeur forced to permanently close its 2 cafes as restaurant restrictions remain

The coronavirus pandemic has devastated food and drink establishments. The Delaware Restaurant Association estimates 20% to 30% of Delaware food and drink establishment owners will permanently close their doors.

Some restaurants have already closed for good. Recent shutterings include Joe's Crab Shack, V-Trap Kitchen & Lounge, and two De La Coeur cafes, all in Wilmington. Mediterranean Grille, a business that operated for more than 10 years in the Newark Shopping Center, closed permanently on March 28.

"Unfortunately due to Covid 19, we can no longer keep our doors open and will be closing for good," read a March 25 Facebook post.

Cheese Chalet, a Pike Creek gourmet food eatery that operated for more than 32 years, turned off its lights on March 28.

Day's cafe and catering business was originally located on North Lincoln Street in Wilmington, in the space that is now home to Locale BBQ Post.

The cafe had a devoted following and was known for its arugula and Cobb salads, turkey and brie sandwiches and warm-pressed Cuban sandwiches.

The original Lincoln Street shop sold truffles, European cheeses, caviar and smoked salmon along with takeout gourmet meals. It moved to The Devon in 2013 and was opened weekdays. The eatery did little advertising, and many considered it a hidden gem.

Day also operated a Sugarfoot cafe in the Nemours building off North Orange Street in downtown Wilmington. It closed in 2014.
