Protests over George Floyd’s death planned across N.J. (June 7, 2020) - nj.com

Protests against police brutality following the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis are planned throughout New Jersey over the next several days.

There have been over 82 protests against police brutality in New Jersey since last weekend, as rallies and marches over Floyd’s death have continued to spread across the nation.

The four police officers at the scene of Floyd’s death have been fired, and one, Derek Chauvin, was initially charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the case. Three other officers were charged with aiding and abetting, while Chauvin’s charge was upgraded to a second-degree murder Wednesday.

In New Jersey, all 21 N.J. county prosecutors offices have called images of Floyd’s death “deeply disturbing” and said police are not exempt from law. State PBA President Pat Colligan also condemned Chauvin and the four officers also at the scene, saying "nobody in law enforcement can look at that video and justify the actions of those officers.”

Among the protests, marches and rallies planned in New Jersey this week:

SUNDAY, JUNE 7

There will be a March to the Vigil in Elizabeth at 11 a.m. Sunday in Jefferson Park at 487 Jefferson Ave.

A march will be held in Nutley down Franklin Ave. starting at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Demonstrators will meet at Yanticaws Park at the Frank Cocchiola Playground at 11:15 a.m.

A march will be held in Gloucester City beginning at noon Sunday. The protest will begin at Proprietors Park on King St. and will move towards the Gloucester City Library on Monmouth St.

A demonstration will be held in Rockaway on Sunday at 12 p.m. There will be speakers in Friendship Field, and after they address the crowd marchers will walk to the bridge on Main St.

There will be a march in Hillside beginning at 12 p.m. on Sunday. Participants will leave from the corner of Hillside and Highland Avenue, behind the police station. A rally will be held at the Hillside High School at the conclusion of the march.

The Millburn Rally for Black Lives begins at 12 p.m. on Sunday. All participants will meet at Millburn High School, and at 1 p.m. march down Millburn Avenue. A Vigil will be held in Taylor Park at 3 p.m. Participants are asked to bring hand sanitizer and face masks, and wear a black shirt if possible.

Protestors are gathering in Middlesex Park at 12 p.m. on Sunday. Face masks are strongly recommended.

Deptford residents, police and the township are jointly hosting a peaceful protest rally from 1 to 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Cattell Road Deptford Soccer Fields. Deptford residents alone are asked to participate, and all are requested to remain in their vehicles, practice social distancing, and wear masks.

There will be a protest in Parker Press Park in Woodbridge at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

A march in Woodbury Heights will be held starting at 1 p.m. Sunday and head through the borough. The march will begin at the playground on Lake Avenue and will continue to Veteran’s Park on Elm Ave. where the demonstration will kneel for nine minutes in remembrance of George Floyd and a commitment against racism.

The ‘9 Mile March for Black Lives’ in Glassboro will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday. The march will begin at Glassboro Intermediate School and go towards the Deptford Police Department with joining points at the Glassboro McDonald’s, Glassboro Friendly’s, the ‘Welcome to Pitman’ rest stop, Terra Nova, Tomar’s discount liquor, Seven Stars Diner, FCA and Tonino’s Pizza along the way.

A protest will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. in Montgomery Mill Pond.

The Young Activists of Atlantic County are hosting a rally, beginning across the street from the Galloway Municipal Complex at 300 E Jimmie Leeds Road. The demonstration will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday. There will also be a protest in the same location at 2 p.m., according to township police.

There will also be a Scotch Plains/Fanwood sit-in at the police department at 2 p.m. Sunday.

There will be a protest in Browns Mills at 100 Pemberton Browns Mills Road at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Montclair High School students have organized a Black Lives Matter Unity Walk for Sunday at 2 p.m., starting at Montclair High School.

LGBTQ organizations and allied partners in South Orange will march at 2 p.m. Sunday, though marchers will gather at 1:45 p.m. The march begins at Ivy Hill Park in Newark and will move to the South Orange Village Center.

Palmyra High School students have organized a peaceful demonstration at the Bandshell, located at Broad and Cinnaminson Streets next to the Borough Hall at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

A peaceful protest is scheduled to take place at 2:45 p.m. in Mindowaskin Park in Westfield on Sunday.

The Interfaith Community Action Network (ICAN) is hosting a virtual vigil for justice and peace at 3 p.m. Sunday on Zoom. Director of the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders Shanel Robinson is the keynote speaker. Online registration is required.

North Hudson for Justice, a grassroots organization of local residents united to demand justice for people of color, have organized a rally featuring local speakers and a commemoration of those lost to police violence that will occur in Hamilton Park in Weehawken from 3 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Kinnelon High School students have organized a march that will take place on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. All marchers will meet on the Green in front of the Kinnelon Library and march on Kinnelon Road to Ricker Road and meet back at the Green for speeches and a ceremony. Participants are asked to wear masks.

A march is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Cliffwood Beach. Protestors will meet in the old A&P parking lot.

A protest is planned at Johnson Park in Jackson at 4 p.m. on Sunday. The park is at the intersection of Kierych Memorial Drive and Cooks Bridge Road.

A protest will be held on the steps of Hudson County Park in Bayonne on Sunday at 4 p.m.

Robbinsville Township is hosting a Night of Unity at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Town Center Gazebo. In a statement, Mayor Dave Fried said that “we feel it is our responsibility as a government, as a society and as human beings to do all we can to be part of the change.”

MONDAY, JUNE 8

A peaceful protest is planned in Union at 1 p.m. on Monday. Protesters will meet at the Boys and Girls Club on Jeanette Avenue and march up Morris Avenue to Town Hall for speeches.

The People’s Organization For Progress (POP) is orchestrating a protest scheduled for Monday at 3 p.m. in front of the Federal Building, 970 Broad Street in Newark.

A Peaceful Protest March and Standing in Collingswood led by Collingswood High School students will be held on Monday. The standing will be held along Haddon Avenue beginning at Cuthbert from 4 to 5 p.m. The Unity March will kick off at 5 p.m., for which participants will march to Knight Park, located in front of the high school.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10

A walk and rally will be held on Wednesday at 12 p.m. in East Orange. Participants will meet at the Sussex Avenue Mall and walk together to a rally that will be held at East Orange City Hall.

There will be a protest held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Wampum Memorial Park in Eatontown. The demonstration will then march to the Eatontown Police Department.

FRIDAY, JUNE 12

A rally is planned at 4 p.m. Friday at the Wall Township Municipal Complex.
