The Comet Cafe on Milwaukee's east side has closed temporarily to fix its ventilation system.
The diner-style restaurant announced that it would temporarily close Sunday.
"The safety of our staff and customers is our first priority," the restaurant said in a Facebook post. "Yesterday, we learned our venting system is in need of repair, so we are temporarily closing Comet Café until the situation is resolved. Sorry for the inconvenience."
Co-owner Leslie Montemurro said the hood fans were underperforming, making the kitchen too hot.
"We have been experiencing maintenance issues with our hood, and were alerted to extreme temperatures in the kitchen this weekend," Montemurro said in an email. "As of today (Monday), we have addressed the major issues, but are inspecting all equipment over the next few days for any additional maintenance that might be necessary."
A reopening date has not been set.
Comet Cafe at 1947 N. Farwell Ave. was one of many Milwaukee businesses to support a mandatory mask rule for the city. In a letter to Mayor Tom Barrett and Common Council President Cavalier Johnson, the businesses asked that "customers and workers in places such as stores, theaters and museums be required to wear face coverings, as well as patrons in restaurants and bars when they are not eating or drinking."
The coronavirus pandemic dealt a tough blow to restaurants and other hospitality businesses. All restaurants were forced to closed or switch to to-go only models during state- and city-wide stay at home order this spring.
A number of restaurants in the Milwaukee area have also announced temporary closings after staff tested positive for the virus.
Comet closed in March when stay-at-home orders were put in effect in Milwaukee and statewide. The cafe opened for pickup and delivery starting April 21. Comet Cafe reopened its dining room for limited dine-in and patio service at the end of June.
