La La Land Kind Café, a coffee shop and café, is planting roots in the Heights. The Dallas-based business recently signed on as a tenant for the M-K-T development at 600 N. Shepherd Dr., according to Eater Houston.
La La Land describes itself as a “socially conscious” café that prioritizes kindness, ingredients and altruism. The café focuses on this by hiring people who have aged out of foster care.
As part of its story, the team behind La La Land explained that after creating a nonprofit centering around helping the youths who come out of foster care, they realized that help with housing, mentorship and therapy wasn’t enough because many employers weren’t willing to hire youth that had no experience.
“If no one was going to hire our youth, we set out to do it ourselves,” La La Land’s website reads.
Blackbird Izakaya closes permanently
The Heights Japanese restaurant Blackbird Izakaya, 1221 W. 11th St., has closed permanently.
A video posted on YouTube by owner Billy Kim, titled “Goodbye Blackbird,” was published on the site July 20. Kim confirmed with Eater Houston that the restaurant would be closing for good because Blackbird couldn’t survive long term while focusing on carryout orders.
