ANN ARBOR, MI -- The location of his new business, right between Michigan Stadium and Pioneer High School, is symbolic to Russ Furrha.
The former University of Michigan and Pioneer football player is continuing his family’s history in the coffee business and opening his own cafe between two memorable places where he spent his athletic career. The Drip House Coffee Company, 1336 S Main St., is Furrha’s project that began in November, but the coronavirus pandemic slowed its opening.
“Going to the University of Michigan and being at Ann Arbor Pioneer, I figured that corner was symbolic of how I grew up and my journey thus far,” said Furrha, who played under former coach Rich Rodriguez. “I really wanted to create an environment that’s non-judgmental and inviting. We want to give everybody positive affirmation.”
Coffee cups at The Drip House, for example, bear messages like “you are brewtiful,” Furrha said. His family has run cafes inside universities across the state, including Eastern Michigan University, the University of Michigan-Dearborn, Michigan State University and Oakland University.
“I wanted to put my own twist on it. They were a little bit more old school. I wanted something more fresh, bold, airy and inviting,” Furrha said. “I wanted to give back to the community that’s sort of supported me throughout my entire childhood and most of my adult life being here in Ann Arbor.”
The pandemic slowed down much of Furrha’s plans. Contractors weren’t showing up and renovations were paused for a while.
“We couldn’t really do anything,” he said.
But things are coming together Furrha is planning a soft opening on July 13. The 48-seat cafe will serve tea, smoothies, a variety of baked goods, and toast dishes, such as “adulting grilled cheese,” which contains proscuitto, gruyere, sharp cheddar, carmelized onions and aioli on sourdough.
“We’re certainly going to take all the restrictions necessary to keep our customers and employees safe. It’s not the most amazing circumstances, but we’re confident in our product and our location,” Furrha said.
