Patrick Mahomes doesn't just have a lot of money now that he's landed a 10-year extension with the Kansas City Chiefs. He's got the most money of any quarterback entering 2020, the most money of any player in NFL history and the biggest contract of any professional athlete in all of sports. To put it simply, he got paid.
We don't know exactly how much Mahomes will actually rake in by the end of his deal, but the reigning Super Bowl MVP has a chance to earn up to $503 million, as ESPN reported, with a floor of about $477 million through the 2031 season.
If you're having trouble comprehending such large figures, you're probably not alone. So in the spirit of appreciating the sheer immensity of the Chiefs superstar's deal, here's a look at eight crazy things Mahomes could conceivably buy with his $503M haul:
Arrowhead Stadium
That's right. His own team's stadium. Arrowhead was built for an estimated $263 million (in 2019 dollars) way back in the 1960s-70s, and its 2007 renovations cost an estimated $440M in today's money. With over $500M, Mahomes could at the very least buy naming rights to the open-air venue. In 10 years, aren't Chiefs fans going to want to rename it Patrick Mahomes Field anyway?
A nearly 40 percent share of the Buffalo Bills
If you're going to play the Bills every now and then while vying for AFC titles, you might as well just literally own them, too, right? Buffalo was valued at $1.9 billion in 2019, which means Mahomes has enough dough to purchase something like a 37 percent share. By the time he signs his next extension ahead of 2031, he'll probably be able to close the deal.
One of 12 different NHL teams
He might not be able to outright buy an NFL team, but he's got his pick of the litter in the NHL! A whopping dozen franchises were valued at or below $500M in 2019, with the Arizona Coyotes rounding out the list at $300M -- a bargain if you're Patrick Mahomes. And if you're Mahomes, why not? Would anyone in the NHL even notice if he just bought the Coyotes, cut out all the hockey stuff and turned them into an offseason training group?
Hundreds of thousands of fast-food chains
Mahomes famously loves ketchup. Burgers, fries and chicken sandwiches tend to go pretty well with that. It'd only set him back a few million to buy his own McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King or Chick-fil-A. And think of the marketing opportunities!
109 years of home-game beers for the entire Arrowhead Stadium crowd
Yes, you read that right. Whether or not he buys and renames Arrowhead, Mahomes has enough money to buy every single fan that fits into the stadium at least one beer ($7.50) for every single home game ... for 109 straight seasons. Fifty years from now, Mahomes may not be playing QB, but his tap sure won't be running dry.
5 million Patrick Mahomes jerseys
NFL Shop sells his red Chiefs No. 15 for $99.99, which isn't necessarily a bargain for the average fan. Worry no more, Chiefs fans! If he wanted to, Mahomes could pay for enough jerseys to outfit all of Kansas City at least 10 times.
83.8 million hot dogs at Arrowhead Stadium
Anything known for its association with ketchup will be worth his investment.
50-yard line Chiefs season tickets for the next 2,208 years
K.C. sells midfield season tickets for about $3,000 a game, but that's like a couple of spare pennies in Mahomes' deep pockets. No one can say whether the Chiefs or the NFL will still be rolling along in the year 4228, but just in case they are, he doesn't have to worry about supplying his great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandchildren with nice seats.
