Burdey's Cafe changes plans based on new information - Fillmore County Journal

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

In the Monday, August 3, 2020, issue of the Fillmore County Journal, in an article titled “Fillmore County businesses make a difficult decision in lieu of the July 25 Executive Order 20-81,” four businesses were referenced with making changes to their business operations as a result of the mask mandate issued by Governor Walz.

As quoted in the article, Charlene Corson Selbee reported, “With only three days to prepare, the Harmony Gardens and Floral indoor gift shop, Home Sweet Home Café and Cakery, Burdey’s Café, and The Sweet Shop and Sandwich Shoppe made the emotionally and financially difficult decision to close temporarily.”

Later in the article, the variations of closure for each of these four businesses were explained more specifically.

For Burdey’s Cafe, the article stated, “Steven and Kristin Burdey [restaurant owners] have temporary closed their indoor dining area and have gone back to only offering carryout.  The sign on the front door of the Burdey’s Café in Peterson explain why the Burdeys made the decision to close indoor dining.”

On Sunday, July 26, 2020, the Burdeys posted a sign that said, “Masks are still required to enter this or any other public building in the state. If you are not eating or drinking, you must have a mask, as per Governor’s orders. Because of the difficulty of enforcing this, and the potential for fines up to $25,000, if guests are non-compliant, we have decided it is not worth the risk at this point in time,” as presented in the August 3, 2020, front page article.  The sign concluded with, “Apologies for any inconvenience, but we have to make smart choices now to get the doors back open later.”

Over the course of the week, as reporter Selbee worked on this story, she contacted Kristin Burdey by phone and via social media.  At the same time this story was developing prior to going to press on Thursday, July 30, 2020, Burdeys had been in touch with Fillmore County Administrator Bobbie Hillery and Sheriff John DeGeorge about the responsibility of businesses in regards to the enforcement of the mandate.

On Saturday, August 1, 2020, based on new information, the Burdeys announced that they reversed their decision.

As the Fillmore County Journal issue dated August 3, 2020, went to press on July 30, 2020, there was no way to change the story to reflect changes made to Burdey’s Cafe operations effective August 1, 2020.

Burdey’s Cafe in Peterson is open for business with indoor dining, as well as carryout.
