It’s a job-hunting truism: you only get one chance to make a good first impression. One way to do that in the age of online applications and networking is with a good headshot.

To help job seekers reach that goal, the Cattfeinated Cat Cafe in Greensburg will offer free headshot sessions on Aug. 17, courtesy of Pittsburgh-based Annie O’Neill Photography.

“Everyone knows it’s really tough to be looking for a job in this environment,” said cafe volunteer and event organizer Gabrielle Stewart. “We wanted to be supportive through this time and find a way to give back.

“Having a good headshot can make your self esteem rise a little bit, too.”

Sessions are available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the cafe at 159 E. Otterman St. Reservations should be made on the cafe’s Facebook page.

O’Neill will take several portrait photos during each session. Each participant will choose one pose that O’Neill will send them in a high-resolution file.

“We’re going to set up a traveling studio with high-quality light and make sure it looks really great,” she said.

O’Neill said she was involved in 10,000 Headshots, a single-day initiative on July 22 that provided 10,000 unemployed Americans with free, professional head shots to include with their resumes and post to job sites.

“I took about 200 photos that day,” she says.

“This helps people looking for jobs and it helps the cafe,” Stewart said.

The photo sessions are a way to give back to the community that has supported the cafe through the pandemic shutdown, said owner Katelynn Jones.

The cafe partners with Wayward Whiskers Animal Rescue to sponsor cats and kittens available for adoption. Visitors can schedule times to interact with adoptable felines in the cafe’s cat lounges.

Current hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays and noon-6 p.m. Sundays. Visitors are required to wear masks.

“We’ve had 60 cats adopted from March to the end of June. We call them our pandemic pets,” Jones said. “Our 100th adoption since we opened in November is coming up. We’re just a couple of cats shy of 100.”

Women job seekers who need a little wardrobe boost also can stop in at the cafe’s new Thrifty Kitty resale shop, where donated clothing, accessories and other items now are available.

Donations of women’s clothing, accessories, small home decor, animal themed merchandise and pet items are being accepted. Clothing should be modern, in-season and in like-new condition. Drop-off hours are noon-6 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays.

Any items that can’t be used at Thrifty Kitty are passed on to shelters or other organizations.

“Nothing is wasted,” Jones said.
