DeKALB – The annual Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak on Aug. 11. These brilliant meteors radiate from the Perseus constellation and appear throughout the sky.
At the next Northern Illinois University STEM Café, hear from experts about space exploration and learn about the Perseids before heading out to view the night sky using your own personal telescope or the naked eye.
The STEM Café will include an outdoor in-person event ($15 to register a group of up to four), as well as a free live-streaming option. It will take place starting at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 11, with speakers beginning promptly at 7 p.m. Registration and more details are available at go.niu.edu/stemcafes.
The speakers include:
• Fermilab scientist Chris Stoughton, who will discuss “Microwave Maps of Matter and Energy”
• NASA Ambassador Joel Knapper, with “NASA’s Return to the Moon in 2024 – How Different Our New Journey Will Be”
• NIU STEM educator Jeremy Benson, who will discuss “The Sky Tonight: What’s Visible and What Causes a Meteor Shower”
The outdoor in-person event will take place at Open Range Southwest Grill, 1 Golfview Lane in Sugar Grove. Food will be available for purchase from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; the speakers will give presentations and answer questions from 7 to 9 p.m., and then visitors will view the night sky until 10:30 p.m.
Registration for the in-person event is $15 per household, with a maximum of four people per household. Registration includes admission and a free NIU throw blanket. Attendees should bring their own chairs and picnic blankets, and each group will have a designated area to maintain safe distancing. Attendees must follow social distancing protocols and wear masks when purchasing food, using restrooms, or when within 6 feet of a person outside their household. An outdoor pavilion is available in case of rain, and registration is limited to 50 people to ensure safe distancing.
The live-streaming event will take place online via Adobe Connect. Registration is required for this free online event. Click on the link provided in your confirmation email to log into the meeting by 6:50 p.m.
