Tally Cat Café celebrates 600 adoptions - FSView & Florida Flambeau

Two years ago, the Tally Cat Café first opened its doors — introducing Tallahassee residents to a space where they can pet and play with cats as they sip their coffee. In that time, the Tally Cat Café has exceeded all expectations, helping to double the size of the Leon County Humane Society’s cat adoption program.

“It’s flown by so fast that honestly it just feels unreal,” co-owner Katie Logue said. “It’s really cool to be at this point and to have gotten so far as we’ve come.” On Friday, Aug. 28, the Café celebrated reaching the milestone of 600 adoptions.

All of the cats in the Café are available for adoption from the Leon County Humane Society (LCHS), and profits from food and drinks help keep the cat program running. When they first started in 2018, Logue and Yehnert hoped to increase LCHS’s adoption rates.

“We’re actually responsible for 50% of adoptions for cats through the Leon County Humane Society,” Logue said. “We’ve doubled their intake and we’ve doubled their adoption rate.”

Like all businesses, the Tally Cat Café has been forced to adjust some of their practices due to the coronavirus outbreak. The Café’s Cat Lounge is now limited to eight visitors at a time, and all customers must wear masks in compliance with the Leon County mask mandate. However, while the number of visitors allowed in the Café at any one time has decreased, more customers than ever are looking to adopt cats.

“More people are looking to adopt right now because they’re at home,” Logue said. “It’s a great time to make that transition into having a pet.”

While the Café averaged five adoptions a week for the past two years, Logue said that, in the past few weeks, the number has risen to ten to fifteen adoptions.

“Adoptions have increased, the number of cats in the room have increased and we’ve had to be a little bit better about managing that balance,” Logue said.

This spring, during kitten season, the Café saw record-high adoption number. This success has inspired them to dream big for the future.

“We did a hundred adoptions in less than two months, I want to see if we can get to a thousand by our third year,” co-owner Courtney Yehnert said.

Logue shared this goal. “If things keep up like this and we keep on with the momentum we have, maybe by our third-year anniversary, we’ll be at a thousand,” Logue said. If the Tally Cat Café’s success thus far is any indication, then they will likely help hundreds more cats find homes in the years to come.
