Changes to Ithaca's cafe scene in a pandemic environment - 14850

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

This week, 14850 Dining is grabbing a cappuccino at one of the area’s cafes and coffee shops in this year’s changed environment due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

This spring, nearly all the coffee shops shut down — either right away or after an effort to do takeout and delivery coffee.

With a sharply reduced student population on east hill, Carriage House Cafe, which had already announced this winter the building was for sale, did a reduced schedule of brunch, pastry, and coffee takeout until they ultimately closed in June.

Collegetown Bagels and Ithaca Bakery quickly closed indoor seating and offered takeout of their coffee and breakfast sandwiches and more, and their existing delivery service expanded.

A wrought iron railing with iron bagels on top, and the words "coffee" and "CTB."

The College Avenue entryway to CTB features a new wrought iron railing.

The Collegetown CTB closed at the end of May, and until they were ready to open the new location across the street, they had a coffee truck serving up a simple menu of coffee drinks and sandwiches. Ithaca Bakery and CTB locations now all have limited indoor seating as well as lots of extra outdoor seating available.

Gimme! Coffee tried window service at their cafes, and delivery in a short radius, before closing for a couple of months. Their New York City cafes won’t be reopening, but the West State Street and Trumansburg Gimme! locations have now both reopened with takeout window service. They’re hoping to reopen at Community Corners and the original cafe on Cayuga Street before long.

The Coal Yard Cafe on Maple Avenue has kept doing takeout service from a kitchen window, and they now have some outdoor seating available.

Press Café in Press Bay Alley.

Press Cafe has reopened in Press Bay Alley downtown with their great espresso drinks, and just a couple blocks east, Angelhearts Diner has amazing vegan espresso drinks made with the alt milk of your choice. Unfortunately, downtown’s other purely vegan spot, Ten Forward Cafe, won’t be reopening. Ithaca Coffee Company’s downtown cafe and tap room is also closed for good, though their Triphammer store is still around.

Starbucks locations in the area were closed for a few months, but have reopened, and Dunkin’ Donuts is offering just drive-through service.

Be patient as our favorite cafes figure out a new approach, and tip your barista well.
