Fire at Nessa's Café damages kitchen - Las Cruces Sun-News

LAS CRUCES - A fire at Nessa’s Café Saturday evening burned portions of the kitchen, but no injuries were reported.

Dan Trujillo, spokesperson for the Las Cruces Fire Department, said firefighters were dispatched to the restaurant on Picacho Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5. Smoke was visible from the windows and gable vent.

Firefighters extinguished the fire, which was contained to the stove area. Trujillo said damage estimates are not available at this time, but there was some smoke damage to the building. The fire is still under investigation by authorities.

Owner Vanessa Smith said the damage is minimal but will require some construction and replacing the vent hood for her oven. She anticipates her restaurant having to remain closed for about a month and a half.

Smith said she was grateful for the support she has received from friends and neighboring businesses. Metal Craft Co. across the street from Nessa’s Café have been putting money together for her, Smith said, and have helped with the hood.

Arik Ruiz, owner of Alma’s Kitchen within St. Genevieve’s Catholic Church Parish Hall, is a regular customer and friend. He started a GoFundMe page to help Smith with expenses. He said he wanted to help his friend and has been inspired by how the community has come together to support the local business. As of Tuesday afternoon, the $1,835 of the $5,000 goal has been raised.

“It’s so nice. I love how the community comes together to help each other,” Ruiz said.

Smith said the work that has to be done because of the fire have been projects on her radar, but now they must get completed so she can open up again as soon as possible.

“With corona everything’s been a struggle lately, but this weekend really hit us,” Smith said. “I’m just really grateful for everybody in the community for helping to get us going again.”
