Bold, fruity flavors found their way to Rogers Park just in time for autumn, as Tropical Smoothie Cafe opened its doors Sept. 18.
Located at 6448 N. Sheridan Rd., Loyola students masked up and lined up outside the Florida-based chain’s new location, in part due to the store’s maximum capacity of 10 people, but also in eager anticipation of the $3 smoothie special for the grand opening.
With mint green walls, light hardwood floors and ample lighting, the cafe invokes tropical, beachy vibes Chicagoans might yearn for in the colder months. Though seating isn’t currently available due to the location’s COVID-19 regulations, all food and smoothies are made to order, so patrons can still soak in the atmosphere while waiting for their choices to be prepared.
As its name would suggest, the cafe serves a large number of smoothies. Options range from fruity combinations like the “Pomegranate Plunge” — made with pomegranate, banana, cranberries and strawberries — to richer flavors like the “Peanut Butter Cup,” which is made with peanut butter, banana and chocolate.
The “Acai Berry Boost” smoothie blends the tart flavors of acai and pomegranate with the sweet flavors of banana and blueberry, making for a creamy, refreshing and satisfying beverage.
All smoothies sit in the $5-6 price range, which may seem pricey at first glance, but at a generous 24 oz., they’re a good bang for your buck — and likely more economically reasonable than your latest Starbucks order.
The smoothies are filling, but for those looking for a larger meal, the cafe also offers a wide variety of food options including wraps and sandwiches between $7-8, flatbreads around $6.50 and quesadillas around $5. They even have a kids menu for the little ones — or college students in need of a snack.
Though Tropical Smoothie Cafe isn’t unique to other health cafes, it stands out in Rogers Park as a great option for students looking for some study fuel, or even just to get out of their apartment.
Tropical Smoothie Cafe is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
