Driving up the shore on Highway 61, the blue building in the heart of Two Harbors always caught my eye. The former Blueberry House Bakery is now the home of Lilly’s Asian Cafe, and I was pleased to see business buzzing on the front porch.
After a recent assignment, I stopped at a gas to fill up and to pore over the menu before phoning in my order.
Lilly’s Asian Cafe has a mix of lo mein, fried rice and bubble teas, and there's a mix of Vietnamese and Chinese egg rolls, pad Thai and even a BBQ bun with chari-siu pork.
Prices were modest. On the higher end, the seafood noodle udon, the triple delight and the dac biet pho for $12.99, but mostly, dishes hung around the 10-dollar mark.
A sucker for seafood, I went with the Wonderful Shrimp. It was ready in a snap.
There’s a cluster of picnic tables resting under trees between Lilly’s and Vanilla Bean. A pair of teens shared a bench before two women parked nearby with their orders.
The Wonderful Shrimp was colorful, sweet, with a mild zip, and the shrimp nearly lived up to the dish’s name — very large, in abundance and cooked to perfection.
And this entree comes with an appreciable mix of carrots, green peppers, mushrooms, water chestnuts and snow peas in a savory brown sauce.
The meat and veggie portion was big, though, I would have liked a bit more white rice to balance out the leftovers — which tasted better the next day.
And you can’t beat that at $10.79.
Lilly’s Asian Cafe, previously Two Harbors’ Vietnamese Lantern, opened in late June, and it no doubt adds a diverse mix of fare for locals and travelers alike.
