A new gourmet market, cafe, and bar is headed for the coastal neighborhood of Leucadia, where it’ll be part of the Beacons, a mixed-use development on North Coast Highway 101. Coming in next to Valentina Restaurant, just blocks from the beach, it’s being designed to cater to its immediate neighbors as well as the surrounding community.
North County resident Matt Power opened the first MRKT SPACE two years ago in Australia, where the corner store, or deli, has been an iconic and integral part of daily life for many decades. Aiming to reinvent what people expect from a convenience store and offer an elevated version of the everyday shopping experience, Power says the market will focus on essentials for entertaining — a place to grab a bottle of wine on the way home from work or some cheese and charcuterie to take to a dinner party — and highlight local brands.
Scheduled to open by early May 2021, the 3,100-square-feet space will also house a full kitchen and on-site eatery with coffee service and an all-day “healthy Italian” menu that includes pizza. There will be indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a 16-foot “experience table” for everything from group meetings to wine tastings and dinners.
Since the pandemic, sales have gone up by fifty percent at his Australian store, and Powers tells Eater that he hopes to open more MRKT SPACE locations in San Diego and North America.
Next Wave Commercial represented both parties in the Beacons lease, and broker Dino De Salvio shared, “MRKT SPACE checked all of the boxes of what we were looking for when hired to lease the ground floor retail portion of this project. As a Leucadia resident, Matt knows what the locals want, and we believe his concept perfectly fits the vibe of such a unique coastal community.”
