Reign Cafe, located inside the DCU Center, is collaborating with youth in Worcester to create one-of-a kind murals at the restaurant.
Reign Cafe, which opened in September, partnered with Main IDEA Youth Arts to ask for original designs depicting the restaurant’s logo. More than 65 submissions were received this month from children 18 years old and younger.
“Finding a way to stay creative, and to find success while being an artist at heart has been a wonderful life challenge,” Reign Cafe co-owner Tam Le said in a statement. “I wouldn’t be where I am without the opportunities given to me by those before me, and without having amazing role models (my parents), and I feel it to be my purpose to pay it forward.”
Reign Cafe brings Vietnamese coffee, tea and smoothies to downtown Worcester, as well as dishes like banh mi, noodle bowls and salad bowls. In January, it announced a partnership with Glazy Susan, a pop-up gourmet doughnut shop.
Next week, a small team of youth artists, led by local artist John Vo and Site-Coordinator Joy Murrieta of Main IDEA Youth & Arts, will paint the chosen submissions on the floor of the cafe.
The Youth Artist Team will include youth from various local youth agencies, including Main IDEA Youth & Arts, the YWCA, the Hope Coalition, and Worcester Public Schools.
“We want to collaborate with local artists and neighborhood youth so that we, together, can feel the joy that one feels when creating something beautiful,” Le said. “The crown in our logo signifies royalty; we believe that everyone is royal, and that everyone is the ruler of their domain. We want to empower everyone to be their best selves.”
Reign Cafe and Glazy Susan debuted in the city with a soft opening on Sept. 12 in the location formerly occupied by Figs & Pigs.
Le expects to start serving indoors by the end of October.
Le also opened Chashu Ramen + Izakaya, featuring modern east Asian cuisine, in September. The restaurant, which Le opened with partner Son Vo on Franklin Street across from the Worcester Common, is not far from Reign Cafe.
“I feel like we’re all building something together in Worcester,” Le told MassLive last month.
