The drive to Tres Leches Cafe on Van Buren draws attention by the abrupt change in landscape; clustered skyscrapers in downtown immediately give way to small businesses.
These small businesses continue to recover from the COVID-19 lockdowns. Yelp has stated that 61% of restaurant closures indicated on the app became permanent, according to their monthly Local Economic Impact Report released in September.
Some businesses, however, escape that statistic.
Bouncing back takes time and money, resulting in indefinite closures for many. Tres Leches Cafe has emerged as one of the few local spots able to effectively transition, modifying operations to safely reopen.
Reopening with limited hours at the Van Buren location due to COVID-19, Tres Leches asked customers via Facebook to “help us stay open by coming to support and following safety guidelines! Please wear your mask, sanitize at the entrance, and mind social distancing markers.”
A recent post on the Tres Leches Cafe Instagram says that their 1714 W Van Buren location is currently open 6 a.m.-1 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The original 5602 S. Central Ave. location with drive-thru remains open until 10 p.m. daily.
With a view of the State Capitol Building, Tres Leches Cafe lies sandwiched between a used car dealership and a local law firm. Just down the street is Capitol High School and the Academy Theater. Driving by, it seems as though Tres Leches had been there for years.
DINING OVER DMS: These Phoenix siblings are selling Mexican food via Twitter
The stand-out contrast between Tres Leches and other coffee chains is found in its extensive menu. The menu includes choices of hot or iced coffees, teas, aguas frescas, aguas sucias (agua fresca with espresso added), aguas locas (aguas frescas with added candy Tajin rim, chamoy, and a tamarindo straw), hot chocolate, and licuados (smoothies). It also highlights fresh pan dulce baked in-house and served daily.
ET Rivera created Tres Leches Cafe in 2014 as the first Mexican Gourmet Coffee Shop in Arizona. Rivera first opened the shop on the front porch of his house with a coffee cart and stayed there for two months before moving into a friend’s restaurant.
Now with two locations in Phoenix, ET is able to share pride in his upbringing and Mexican heritage through gourmet Mexican coffee and freshly-baked pan dulce.
According to its official website, Tres Leches Cafe connects with the greater Phoenix community in many different ways. The Cafe regularly hosts events for organizations like Mi Familia Vota, as well as local and national Latino Democratic leadership and organizers.
The cafe supports fellow local businesses through “weekly vendor opportunities for Hispanic/Latinx/Chicanx independent/small businesses to showcase their goods,” according to their website.
Tres Leches Cafe also regularly donates to other local 501c3 nonprofits and programs. The staff plans to expand these efforts as the business continues to grow.
Growing a small business during a pandemic is no easy feat, but Tres Leches Cafe has a lot of fans.
With more than 30,000 followers on Instagram and an average of 600 likes per post, food lovers are eager to get their hands on a classic pan dulce or try a new coffee concoction. Just in time for fall, patrons can try pumpkin-filled empanadas or puerquitos, traditional Mexican gingerbread cookies in the shape of little pigs.
