Voting in CT: Here’s what you need to know for Election Day

With Election Day — and the preelection voter registration deadline in Connecticut — quickly approaching, here’s what you need to know before you head to the polls.

Am I eligible to vote?

To vote in Connecticut, you must be a United States citizen living in the state and be 18 years old by Election Day.

When do you have to register to vote by?

The final deadline for voter registration in Connecticut is seven days prior to the election.

This year, that means the final day to register to vote is Tuesday, Oct. 27.

How do you register to vote?

What happens if you miss the Oct. 27 deadline?

The state also has Election Day registration, which allows anyone who meets the eligibility requirements to register on Nov. 3 and vote that same day.

This registration, however, is not available at polling locations. There are designated Election Day registration locations in each town that open from 6 a.m. to when the polls close at 8 p.m.

If registering to vote on Election Day, you will register and cast your ballot at the designated Election Day registration location. State officials urge voters to arrive early in case of long lines. Proof of identity and residency will be required to register.
