CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Hundreds of people in the community opened their hearts and filled their hands with grocery bags of food to support Manna Café Ministries Saturday for the 11th annual Combat Hunger food drive.
With the support of the community along with the hard work of volunteers and staff of Manna Café, Kenny York, Founder of the organization said this year’s Combat Hunger food drive brought in a total of 27,678 pounds of food and $5,675.89 in monetary donations.
Close to 200 volunteers spent most or part of their day at over a dozen grocery stores in Clarksville-Montgomery County and Dover, Tennessee accepting food and monetary donations to stock the Manna Café food pantry for those in need.
Clarksvillenow.com and 5 Star Media Group partnered with Manna Café once again this year for Combat Hunger. Participating grocery stores included all Clarksville area Walmart’s, Kroger’s, Hilltop Supermarket, and Dollar General Market, along with Piggly Wiggly and Dollar General Market in Dover.
Jose Fernandez stopped by after shopping and donated some nonperishable food items and explained why he was helping. “We found out about Manna Café’s purpose is in the community and it makes us feel good giving to those people who need it,” said Fernandez.
One of the volunteers collecting food, Veronica Arquette, talked about why she was taking time to support Combat Hunger. “I’m helping today because it’s super important to help out in your community, this is amazing,” Arquette said.
