Eatbeat: Turkey in demand at Roadhouse Cafe - Grand Forks Herald

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

Some truck drivers go for a hearty Roadhouse Breakfast for $8.99. Many want much more and find choices on the menu, including Long Haul Steak and Eggs and an 18 Wheeler with eggs, hash browns and meats. Others sit and visit over coffee.

Breakfast is served round the clock at the Roadhouse Café. The menu is almost unending. It ranges from a Southern breakfast, biscuits and gravy and a ham steak version. Choices among the breakfast listing extend to a raspberry fritter French toast.

Burgers are popular. And the menu shows hot sandwiches so well known in days of yore. There’s hot turkey, meatloaf and hot beef or hamburger versions. They are served with mashed potatoes or French fries and covered with gravy.

At all hours, homemade caramel rolls are popular choices.

“Turkey goes fast,” says Rachel Welsh, who manages the kitchen with its wide open window to the large seating area. On a recent Sunday morning visit, I found a place at the counter. There, the window also gives a view of the kitchen with workers preparing orders.

My server was Heidi Mundis, who has been on the job for three years. She was friendly and efficient. She said the masks make it hard to talk with customers and to show a smile.

And part of the job these days is it to continually do sanitizing.

While there are customers day and night, the busiest times at the Roadhouse are on Saturdays and Sundays. Most customers prefer the booths, which are padded with black coverings. The large windows give a view of the roads.

Whether it’s July or November, turkey is popular. And baking of carrot cake and caramel rolls are the two claims to fame by the kitchen crew.

There’s an adjacent lounge for customers who prefer eating and socializing there. And there’s an extensive shop beyond the restaurant with food for the road or other needs of truckers.
