Here’s what to expect when you visit IllumiNight’s ‘magical drive-thru experience’ - KSAT San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – With the rise in COVID-19 cases across the nation and right here in San Antonio, we’ll have to find new ways to celebrate Christmas this year, safely and at a distance.

We visited the San Antonio Spurs’ new “magical drive-thru experience,” known as IllumiNight at the AT&T Center. Despite all of the negativity looming from the coronavirus spike, this was all we needed to truly get into the spirit of the holiday season.

IllumiNight was recently announced by the San Antonio Spurs and will remain open from now through Jan. 3. The display features more than 4 million twinkling lights, an abundance of snacks on-site, social distancing between vehicles, and photo opportunities with Santa Claus.

The drive-thru event costs $35.50 per vehicle, but an express pass is also available for $63 per vehicle. Tickets can be purchased online through Ticketmaster or illumi-Night.com.

We visited the drive-thru on a Tuesday night, and the crowd wasn’t too large. Right before you begin basking in the glow of the Christmas lights, you have several food options to choose from, with vendors offering a few different varieties of elotes -- including a Hot Cheetos elote -- popcorn, hot cocoa, ice cream, and other goodies.

Then, you’re free to enter the Christmas lights path that wraps around the AT&T Center grounds. With our windows rolled down, the holiday hits blaring from our car speakers and plenty of distance between our vehicle and others, we felt the simple joys of Christmas all through the air.

The route took us nearly an hour to complete. Granted, that time could change depending on how many people are visiting. Still, the workers at the drive-thru are great at ensuring there is plenty of space between vehicles as you tour the display.

Some of our favorites on the path included a polar bear, a golden train carrying Christmas ornaments, candy canes, and a tunnel of rainbow Christmas lights that encircle your vehicle.

Half of the proceeds from the drive-thru will be donated to Spurs Give, the Spurs Sports and Entertainment’s nonprofit partner.

IllumiNight is a good idea if looking for a holiday family outing or are just looking to boost your spirits this Christmas season.
