Hamden Cafes Liquor License Suspended For Super Spreader Event - Patch.com

HAMDEN, CT — A Hamden café had its liquor license suspended after about 180 people were found inside late Friday night, in violation of the state's coronavirus regulations, according to officials.

Consumer Protection Commissioner Michelle H. Seagull on Thursday issued a summary suspension of the liquor permit for Café Studio 1537, located at 1537 Dixwell Avenue in Hamden.

Café Studio 1537 was the scene of a large private gathering on Dec. 4 that violated Gov. Ned Lamont's executive orders that were implemented in response to the coronavirus pandemic, according to Seagull.

Hamden police responded to the café after receiving a complaint that the business was over capacity. Arriving officers found a full parking lot and a crowded dance floor with about 150 people inside, including many who weren't wearing masks, according to officials.

Police also found another 25 to 30 people in the bar area, in clear violation of social distancing requirements, officials said.

The permittee told police the event was a private party and she didn't know how many patrons were inside. She also said the patrons entered the premise wearing masks but told officers that she can't "control who wears them once they are inside," according to the summary suspension order.

At the time of the event, sector rules limited indoor private, social, and recreational gatherings at commercial venues to a maximum of 25 people. Premises are also required to ensure that all patrons practiced social distancing and wore face masks while not eating, according to the order.

"With COVID-19 infection rates on the rise, the gathering hosted at Studio 1537 is exactly the type of super spreader event the sector rules are designed to prevent," Seagull said in a statement. "We expect our liquor permittees to hold public health and safety as their highest priority in order to protect themselves, their employees, their customers and their community. I want to thank the Hamden Police Department and local public health officials for their work and cooperation in this matter."
