Oregon businesses and nonprofits received $7 billion in coronavirus relief money this year, a lifeline for 66,000 organizations in the early days of the pandemic recession.
The money came as loans through the federal Payroll Protection Program and much of that money will ultimately be forgiven for those organizations that used the money to keep their workers employed.
The long list of loan recipients reads like a directory of Oregon commerce: Old Spaghetti Factory ($9.2 million), Pendleton Woolen Mills ($8.7 million loan), nonprofit Mercy Corps ($7.6 million) artisan ice cream shop Salt & Straw ($4.5 million), Powell’s Books ($4.1 million) Timberline Lodge ($2.7 million) and Voodoo Doughnut ($1.8 million.)
Nearly every type of organization, from every part of the state, participated in the relief program, which offered loans of up to $10 million.
Congress designed the program for small businesses but in Oregon – as elsewhere – an outsized share of the funds went to large organizations who received multimillion-dollar loans.
Detailed information on loan recipients became available following a lawsuit from 11 news organizations.
Here’s a rundown of all Oregon’s grants, sorted alphabetically. (You can sort by dollar value within each chart or see the Top 25 here.)
