After graduating from The Culinary Institute of America, Chester county native Tess Wofford transformed the former Chadds Cafe into a delicious new eatery.
OSO Sweet’s wood environs may imply rustic and homey, but its pastries, cookies and cakes are restaurant caliber. Pastry chef Tess Wofford got the keys to the former Chadds Cafe on the same day she graduated from the Culinary Institute of America via Zoom.
The Birmingham Township native admits that opening mid-pandemic was daunting. “But this is exactly where I’m supposed to be,” she says.
Breakfast treats include puff pastries made with sausage, egg and cheese. The Philly cheesesteak variety is another favorite. But OSO Sweet’s marquee items are the sweets—and rightly so. Cookie varieties include salted chocolate chip, peanut butter Oreo, oatmeal-pecan-chocolate chip and pudding (strawberry-white chocolate chip and cookies-and-cream). Wofford’s scones are also a hit—particularly the lemon blueberry, a delicious holdover from Chadds Cafe by customer demand. “Turns out it was a secret recipe,” says Wofford. “But the pastry chef was kind enough to share it with me.”
Wofford has lots of treats planned for the holidays, including Yule logs and a red velvet cake cookie with white chocolate chips and cream cheese frosting. Wofford hopes to keep outdoor seating throughout the winter. Space heaters are being deployed in the spacious patio and adjacent tented area, and she currently hosts bands on Friday nights. Guests can BYOB and order from OSO Sweet’s menu. These days, we need all the sweetness we can get.
