Alle-Kiski job fair official: 'There have been jobs here the whole time' - TribLIVE

Organizers of the largest job fair in the Alle-Kiski Valley say there are jobs to be had for those job seekers not spooked by the pandemic.

“There have been jobs here the whole time, and there will continue to be openings in the Alle-Kiski Valley,” said Rick O’Domes, CareerLink Alle-Kiski manager in New Kensington.

“But don’t wait until the pandemic is over and your unemployment runs out,” added O’Domes, who said it’s also a good time to change careers and consider re-training.

The state’s pandemic-driven unemployment high of 16.1% last April and the massive job losses in the leisure and hospitality industry during the shutdowns should not cause people to not look for jobs now, O’Domes said.

The news keeps getting better if you look, said O’Domes, who expects continued job opportunities for residents — if they know where and how to look.

The state reported Friday a 0.1% decline in the unemployment rate to 6.7%, which is the same as the national rate.

Although the pandemic is forcing the normally bustling job fair at Penn State New Kensington in Upper Burrell to move to a virtual arena, the jobs are there. The job fair will be held online Wednesday, Feb. 3.

More than 40 employers, and counting, from health care, manufacturing, transportation, entertainment, social services, banking and retail are registered, O’Domes said.

Although some employers had to close during the pandemic, businesses have been re-opening.

“There still lots of manufacturing jobs, technical jobs, lots of health care openings,” he said. “With the exception of the hospitality and retail, most of the positions are still open.”

High in-demand jobs in the Alle-Kiski Valley are in health care, with lots of organizations looking for nurses and people to administer vaccinations, manufacturing and transportation, O’Domes said.

Local employers in manufacturing and health care who will be participating in the job fair say there are current and future opportunities.

Serving the medical, military and manufacturing industries, Oberg Industries in Buffalo Township has been an essential business throughout the pandemic.

“We haven’t suffered because those markets — medical and military — are part of our core business,” said Ken Eck, a spokesman for Oberg, who expects manufacturing opportunities to continue to grow.

Currently, the company is hiring workers in a range of positions including apprentices, engineers, quality control managers and others with salaries for currently open positions starting at $30,000 and up.

Presbyterian SeniorCare Network in Oakmont is hiring nurses, personal care assistants and well as workers as dining services, housekeeping and maintenance.

“Our goal is to create awareness and enthusiasm for the range of clinical and non-clinical career opportunities available in senior living,” said Debbie Dunn, director of talent acquisition for SeniorCare. “It’s a rewarding field that may not quickly come to mind for most people.”

Residents who can’t make the job fair but are in the job market, can contact CareerLink directly to start a job search.
