The co-owner of Breen’s Cafe, Matt Hanlon, was shaking after he received a Facetime from Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, on Tuesday.
Portnoy reached out to Hanlon to offer help to Breen’s Cafe. The Barstool Fund would be providing financial aid to the Worcester restaurant as the fund continues to help struggling businesses amid the COVID pandemic.
“Man, I don’t even know what to say,” Hanlon told Portnoy. “I’m in like shock right now.”
The Barstool Fund provides aid to businesses struggling due to COVID-19. To date, the fund has helped raised nearly $30 million and distributed funds to more than 180 businesses.
Breen’s Cafe, located on Cambridge Street in Worcester, opened in 1934 and has been family-operated since the 1960s.
In a video sent to the Barstool Fund, Hanlon said COVID has put “a lot of strain” on the restaurant. The capacity of the restaurant has been cut to 30 people.
Plexiglass divides most of the area prompting Hanlon to compare the restaurant to a “penalty box” in hockey.
“It look’s like the TD Banknorth in here right now,” Hanlon said. “I feel like I’m in a penalty box.”
Hanlon had just put his son down for a nap, when Portnoy reached out. Portnoy joked that Hanlon was suffering from a case of “bed head.”
Before Hanlon accepted the Facetime, Hanlon’s wife joked, he looked ridiculous.
Portnoy said Breen’s Cafe should receive the funding within 72 hours of the call.
“I appreciate it man,” Hanlon said. “You have no idea.”
Portnoy, who founded Barstool Sports in Boston, gave a shout out to Hanlon and Massachusetts before hanging up.
“We’ve got Masshole vibes going on,” Portnoy said. “I like it.”
