DeeDee's Café serves up comfort in Richardton - The Dickinson Press

“We’ve been open for a few months now, we have our days, but we’ve been getting steadier and steadier every single day,” said Alexis Talbot, server and the owner’s niece.

While many places closed or slowed down, DeeDee’s Café, at 216 North Ave E. in Richardton, just kept on trucking with their busy curbside service when the state risk level restricted all in-house dining. The owner’s daughter Jessica Mayer said COVID doesn’t have much of an affect on business as earlier in the pandemic.

Talbot said the café has situated tables six feet apart for social distancing purposes.

The City of Richardton also helped with their continued patronage, whether through take out orders or catered events. According to the owner’s daughter, Jessica Mayer, the café has catered to an event at Assumption Abbey in Richardton which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Mayer also attributes the cafe’s success to its good food and quality service, and Talbot agreed.

“When you come to eat at a restaurant or café, you want good, friendly service, you wanna feel at home,” said Talbot.

The café attempts to contribute to the homelike atmosphere by providing homemade offerings. Offering a plethora of down home items from soups to biscuits and gravy, with their specialty gravy made from scratch each day.

In some recipes, they use local ingredients. The breakfast sausage comes from Beulah

Breakfast Items and are among the most sought after items on the breakfast menu. Sunday dinner specials were taken off the menu because of the overwhelming demand for breakfast.

Anderson and her family are not strangers when it comes to risky new beginnings. Many years ago, she left the familiar territory of New Hampshire with her husband and daughter for a new beginning in North Dakota. Talbot and her mother soon followed.

Anderson opened Huskies Café in Dickinson which she owned and operated for 15 years, but saw a business opportunity in Richardton which soon became DeeDee’s Café.

When the restaurant first opened, Anderson asked Mayer if she still wanted her favorite meal from the old restaurant on the menu, and Mayer was emphatic with her “Yes!”

The Jessica Special consists of a grilled cheese sandwich, French fries and a side of pickles — a favorite that hallmarks the variety of tasty treats on order, including a tasty dessert of their famous strawberry rhubarb shakes.

Mayer said the strawberry rhubarb shakes gained popularity after Bernie Marsh, the owner of Bernie’s Esquire Club’s son, Max raved online about the shake.

“After his son posted that the strawberry rhubarb shake was good, we were getting calls for strawberry rhubarb shakes to go...social media really helps too,” said Mayer.

Their caramel rolls are also well-known. According to Talbot, Anderson comes in early in the morning and bakes loads of caramel rolls which usually sell quickly, about three dozen per day.

Renovations are being made in hopes of being granted a liquor license and the menu is expected to be updated in the near future.

The café is open Tuesday through Saturday from 7a.m. to 7p.m. and Sundays from 7a.m. to 2 p.m.
