As authorities continue to scour the country for those involved in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, here are some of the most high-profile people who have been charged by the Department of Justice so far.

Klete Keller, a 38-year-old former swimmer and five-time Olympic medalist who was teammates with Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, was charged with knowingly entering a restricted building, engaging in disorderly conduct at the Capitol and obstructing law enforcement, and has been ordered to stay away from Washington, D.C., until after Inauguration Day (photos show that Keller was wearing his Olympic team jacket inside the Capitol Rotunda). 

Jon Schaffer, a 52-year-old guitarist and founding member for the heavy metal group Iced Earth whose most popular single “Watching Over Me” has nearly 10 million streams on Spotify, was charged with six counts including engaging in an act of physical violence inside a Capitol building, violent entry and disorderly conduct. 

Brad Rukstales, a 52-year-old who was chief executive of the Illinois-based data analytics marketing firm Cognesia, was charged with knowingly—or with intent to impede government business—entering or remaining in a restricted building without lawful authority, engaging in disorderly conduct on the Capitol grounds, and violent entry and disorderly conduct on the Capitol grounds (Rukstales has since apologized and been terminated from his job).  

Derrick Evans, a 35-year-old West Virginia state lawmaker, was charged with unlawfully entering restricted grounds and violent entry and disorderly conduct after he recorded himself storming the Capitol (Evans has since resigned). 

The above-named individuals or their attorneys did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 

Tangent 

Evans is far from the only public employee to be charged with participating in the riots. According to a Forbes tally, over a dozen have been accused of involvement, including multiple off-duty police officers, a U.S. Navy contractor, at least two teachers and a former school district occupational therapist.  

Surprising Fact 

Though not charged in the siege, Jason Alexander, who was married to singer Brittney Spears for 55 hours in 2004, attended the D.C. protest that preceded the Capitol storming on Jan. 6, posting a selfie with the caption “DC. Millions showed up.” 

Key Background 

Federal officials said Friday that nearly 300 cases had been opened and roughly 100 people charged for alleged involvement in the deadly attack, a number that is only expected to grow as more suspects are identified through photo or video footage of the day, tips or other means of investigation. “If this investigation were a football game, we’d still be in the first quarter,” Steve D’Antuono, the FBI Washington Field Office’s assistant director in charge, said Friday.
