La La Land Kind Cafe is a socially conscious cafe that prioritizes kindness above all else. The Cafe makes a special effort to employ foster youth who have aged out of the system through its We Are One Project and its TikTok account is all about acts of kindness.
The cafe’s “kindness drive-by” typically entails a team of earnest young people from La La Land Kind Cafe showering strangers with compliments and positivity. It’s the kind of thing that might sound corny — until it happens to you or you witness the joy it brings others. But cynics will love their drive-by fails as well.
In one particularly moving episode of the series, the La La Land crew made a special connection.
“I love that orange sweater,” they said to a woman as they drove by.
Then there were many “I love yous” exchanged between the team and strangers. But by chance, they happened upon a woman in a wheelchair. She appeared to be panhandling, but when they spoke to her she lit up.
“Listen to me, you are beautiful,” a La La Land member said. “I love you so much.”
“Thank you,” the woman said softly. “I’m glad somebody came.”
“I’ve come through a lot so I am very grateful. I am very grateful. And I have not cut myself in a whole year!” she added with a smile.
“I’m so proud of you. We love you so much,” La La Land replied.
They gave the woman some money, but as they were driving away they felt like they had to go back. The group stayed with her for a few more moments and provided a little more cash.
“We love you. Don’t forget that,” they told her.
The video garnered over 1.1 million views on TikTok.
“I hope she finds solace but I’m proud of how far she’s come,” one user commented.
“I started crying when she said she hadn’t cut herself,” another wrote.
“She looked genuinely moved and she has been through a lot,” someone said.
