California Is Sending Out $600 Stimulus Checks—Here’s Who Qualifies - Forbes

Topline

As Americans wait for Congress to pass President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion economic relief plan, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law the state’s own stimulus package, which includes direct payments of $600 to low-income individuals.

Key Facts

People who claim the Earned Income Tax Credit on their 2020 taxes, who typically make less than $30,000 per year, and undocumented immigrants earning less than $75,000 per year will be eligible for the $600 payments.

Those who participate in a number of public assistance programs are also eligible, including federal supplemental security income (SSI), state supplementary payment (SSP), the state’s family welfare program CalWORKS and the Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants.

At a press conference Tuesday, Newsom said the economic relief was intended to target those who were left out of federal stimulus measures, such as non-citizens and farm workers “who never took a day off, never complained and were there to make sure that everything was on your table and tables all across the country,” he said.

In addition to direct payments, the measure will also provide $2 billion in grants available to small businesses.

Key Background

As Congress continues negotiations on a federal stimulus package that would hand out $1,400 checks to many Americans, a number of states, like California, have passed their own relief bills with direct payments. Maryland passed a bill last week that would give $300 to individuals who filed for the Earned Income Tax Credit. New Mexico and Colorado distributed one-time direct payments to people who received unemployment benefits. Democrats hope to have a federal stimulus package ready for President Joe Biden’s signature by mid-March.

Tangent

Though the economic relief package is a win for Newsom, the governor still faces a number of political controversies. A growing recall effort, bankrolled by Republicans and  backed by small business owners frustrated at Covid-19 restrictions, is gaining steam. On the other side of the aisle, Newsom is locked in a battle over school reopenings with members of his own party.
