Loyal customers helped Zazzy Cafe survive pandemic - Fort Morgan Times

Zazzy Cafe opened in November of 2016 and since has gained loyal regular customers with its unique options, friendly service and relaxed atmosphere.

“I would say that our personal attention to our customers is what probably sets us apart, and we try really hard to make sure that we know all of our customers we know their names and what they like,” Robert Ingersol, owner of Zazzy Cafe, said. “And we offer unique items that you can’t get in other places here in town, like paninis.”

The restaurant was created by Marlene Funk, who sold it to Ingersol over two years ago. The menu has expanded since he took over, though many of the fan favorites remained.

“We’ve changed the menu quite a bit; we’ve kept a lot of the core items that Marlene had but we’ve added other things to the menu, like the new chef selection menu,” Ingersol said.

Specialty salads, tapas and flat breads were added to the menu. The cafe recently obtained a beer and wine license and is offering local beers and wine. Ingersol also supports local artists and features one in his restaurant every month.

“We feature local artists; every month I have a new local artists that we hang,” Ingersol said. “We feature that on the Art Walk every month, so it does bring in customers that we wouldn’t normally see, and that’s a really exciting thing.”

When COVID-19 spread to Morgan County, Ingersol had to adapt to a model that was dependent on take-out.

“We did open up our business and started doing dinners for two during the pandemic, to try to bring people into the store for pickup, and that seemed to work really well for us,” Ingersol said. “We’re a small kitchen, so we don’t have a lot of space. So we have to kind of pick and choose what we can do.”

The efforts were successful thanks to Zazzy’s loyal customers.

“The thing is, we have a very strong following and our customers have treated us really, really well,” Ingersol said. “Not to say that we didn’t struggle, but we certainly were very fortunate.”

Zazzy is a member of the Fort Morgan Chamber of Commerce and Ingersol is a former chamber board member.

“I’m a member of the Chamber because I believe in what it brings to our community. They work hard to bring awareness to our business community,” Ingersol said. “I just believe in what they bring to the table for our local businesses and downtown.”
