Here is what’s happening on Day 38 of spring training with the Cleveland Indians - cleveland.com

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Trevor Bauer spent 6 1/2 years pitching for the Indians. During his time in Cleveland he had his converts and detractors among his fellow pitchers when it came to his deep dive into the physical and statistical side of his craft. One of the converts was Shane Bieber.

On Saturday the two will meet in a spring training game at Camelback Ranch in Glendale. They will do so as the reigning Cy Young winners in the American and National leagues, respectively. Bieber is still pitching for the Indians, while Bauer is with the Dodgers.

Bieber won the AL Cy Young by going 8-1 with a 1.63 ERA. He led MLB in wins, ERA (1.63) and strikeouts (122) and was unanimous winner by members of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Bauer, pitching for the Reds, went 5-4 with a 1.73 ERA. He struck out 100, walked 17 and led MLB in ERA+ at 281 (league average is 100). He received 27 of a possible 30 first-place votes by the BBWAA.

Bieber and Bauer were teammates for about 1 1/2 years until the Indians dealt Bauer to Cincinnati on July 31, 2019. Mike Clevinger gravitated toward Bauer as well. So did Zach Plesac and Aaron Civale when they arrived from the minors early in the 2019 season. Bauer and Clevinger are gone, but Bieber, Plesac and Civale are the foundation of the Indians’ new rotation.

During last season Bieber and Bauer would talk or exchange texts. When the season started, they had similar betting odds to win the Cy Young.

“That’s not something I pay too much attention to,” said Bieber said on a conference call with reporters after winning the award last year. “But he kind of does and he texted it to me, and it goes back to this friendly competition that we have with each other. All I replied back was like, ‘Hey, why not go to 2 for 2?’ And he said, ‘Sounds like a deal.’”

The deal bore fruit and the next chapter of their friendly competition starts Saturday. The odds are that something is at stake on who pitchers better.

Get on the bus, Gus: Bus for Dodgers game leaves at 10:30 a.m.

Newbies: The Indians have added right-handers Dakody Clemmer, Justin Garza, Alex Royalty and lefty Juan Hillman to their spring training player pool. They were added for games that will take place in Arizona from March 30 to April 14 prior to the minor-league schedule starting in Arizona on April 15. The player pool is maxed out at 75.

The Indians break camp on March 30 and head to Detroit to open the season. Class AA and Class A players can’t report to Goodyear until the the Indians, including Triple-A players, leave the facility.

They said it: “They haven’t talked to me about anything yet. Obviously, we’re getting toward the end of camp, people start getting antsy. But I came in today with my head down and just wanted to stay focused on my outing,” -- Indians lefty Logan Allen after throwing five scoreless innings against the Rockies on Friday. Allen was asked if the Indians had told him he’d made the opening day roster.
