Here is what’s happening on Day 41 of spring training with the Cleveland Indians - cleveland.com

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Ready or not, here comes the Indians and the 2021 season.

The Indians will leave Arizona after playing the Diamondbacks on Tuesday at Chase Field in their final exhibition games of the spring. They’ll land in Detroit tonight to prepare for opening the season on Thursday afternoon at Comerica Park. Shane Bieber will start for the Indians and left-hander Matthew Boyd is expected to start for Detroit.

Asked if the Indians had accomplished everything they needed to since reporting to the desert on Feb. 15, manager Terry Francona said it’s hard to tell.

“I never know that,” he said. “That’s why there has been years I’ve left camp and felt like ‘Aww man, we are ready to go,’ and we spin our wheels coming out of camp. There’s been years where I’ve been borderline terrified and you win six or seven in a row.”

Francona said it’s more important to use spring training to get players in a good frame of mind where they’re confident about the season to come.

“Because when the bell rings, it’s completely different,” said Francona. “We reminded them the last couple of days ‘Hey, you’ve been here for six weeks, you’ve been working hard. With the early games we’re playing with packing, with leaving. Don’t let the game creep up on you. Make sure you get your workouts in. Because you don’t want to lose what you gained over the last six weeks.’”

Unless there are late change, the 26-man big-league roster is set. What isn’t known is what players the Indians are sending to the alternate site at Columbus. MLB’s health and safety protocols released before the start of spring training said teams could send 28 players to the alternate camp, but that may have changed.

The Indians will workout at Comerica Park on Wednesday.

On the clock:

Temperature: It will be 87 degrees in Goodyear on Tuesday with a low of 53 degrees.

COVID (testing) and scrambled eggs: Position players report for testing at 7:30 a.m. MST followed by pitchers scheduled to pitch in Tuesday’s game at 7:45 a.m. Non-game pitchers report for testing at 10 a.m. Breakfast will follow.

Session men: Triston McKenzie and Cam Hill will throw bullpen sessions at 10:30 a.m.

On the mound: RHP Aaron Civale (1-2, 6.14 ERA) will face the Diamondbacks and RHP Taylor Widener (1-0, 4.00) at 3:40 p.m. ET at Chase Field in Phoenix. Bally Sports Great Lakes will televise the game. It can also be heard on the Indians.com webcast.

They will follow: Bryan Shaw, Trevor Stephan, Emmanuel Clase, James Karinchak and Nick Sandlin are scheduled to follow Civale to the mound on Tuesday.

For the record: The Indians are 10-17-1 in Cactus League play this spring.

Swing and a miss: Catcher Austin Hedges is hitting .057 (2-for-35) this spring with 20 strikeouts and no walks. That means he’s struck out in 57% of his at-bats.

What they said: “I don’t mind playing all three outfield positions. That’s why I train so hard in the offseason to do stuff like that. It’s not a problem for me. It’s a lot of fun actually,” -- outfielder Jordan Luplow on the possibility of playing center field.
