Historic Hanna’s Town opens to the public May 1, offering guided tours, a new walking path and a look into recently reconstructed and renovated log buildings.
The Westmoreland Historical Society, which maintains the Revolutionary War-era site with Westmoreland County Parks and Recreation, also announced dates for its annual antiques and collectibles sales and the annual “Remember When” program.
“Our staff, volunteers, and community partners have been hard at work over the last year creating new opportunities for visitors to enjoy local history,” said Pam Curtin, WHS education and interpretation manager.
The WHS offices, museum gallery, gift shop and library were closed by governor’s orders in March 2020, reopening Thursdays-Sundays in June following CDC guidelines, according to librarian Anita Zanke. Some programs were canceled and others, including a tea and house tour, were conducted virtually. The Antiques & Collectibles Market was canceled in May 2020, but continued after that for the rest of the season under CDC guidelines.
Outdoor activities at the site close for the winter, while the gift shop and research library remain open.
Opening day festivities will include guided tours, living history displays and demonstrations by Proctor’s Militia, I.B.W.C.P. Historical Society members will receive 20% off purchases in the Westmoreland History Shop, while non-members will receive a 10% discount. Hours will be 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Following opening day, hours will be 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays and 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sundays at the historical complex at 809 Forbes Trail Road, Hempfield. Covid-19 safety protocols will be in place.
The Lefevre House, gifted by the estate of Thelma Lefevre, was dismantled from its original location in Jeannette and reconstructed in 2020.
“We are using the house to interpret family homes and 18th-century log building styles,” Curtin said.
A storehouse inside the fort was reconstructed at the same time, using logs from a house taken down in Greensburg. A small log house also was renovated into a blacksmith shop that will feature demonstrations of the important 18th-century trade.
The walking path was developed by Troop 405 Eagle Scouts Adam Nichols, Jim Dzurica and R.J. Valerio.
“The walking path is fairly short and goes through a former section of lawn in the middle of the property, and into the wooded area,” Curtin said. “Once flowers and grasses start to come out, it will be more of a leisurely walk to enjoy the native plants” installed by the Scouts.
Following opening day, guided tours will be offered weekends during May and Thursdays-Sundays starting in June. Space is limited and reservations are requested for all tours at 724-836-1800, ext. 210.
