Here are the musicians who make up the historic La Porte City Band - What's New LaPorte?

Press release and photo provided

The historic La Porte City Band will begin its new season Wednesday, June 9, and continue through Wednesday, Aug. 11. Concerts are free each Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Dennis F. Smith Amphitheater in beautiful Fox Park.

The La Porte City Band was formed in 1879 and has been performing every year since then for our community. This makes it one of the longest-standing community bands in the nation. In spite of pandemic conditions last year, the band members were able to maintain distance from one another and use safety protocols to perform, making it one of the few bands in the country to be able to do so.

The Dennis F. Smith Amphitheater has had a facelift and sports new paint and new stage lighting, and the grounds around the facility have been improved and upgraded. The Arts in the Park organization has a new concession stand, and new restroom facilities are now open there as well.

The band is under the direction of Charles Steck, who begins his ninth season as musical director. Steck holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from Valparaiso University. He was band and choir director at La Porte High School until 2016, and currently is professor of trumpet at Valparaiso University and Andrews University. In addition, he maintains an active trumpet studio here in La Porte and the region. He also performs in trumpet extensively throughout the Michiana area with such groups as the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra, the Elkhart County Symphony, the St. Joseph Municipal Band, Windiana, the North American Brass Company, and the Tom Milo Big Band.

Members of the band this year will include:
