My Turn: Stone Soup Café a wonderful resource - The Recorder

I write to express my appreciation for a wonderful resource we have here in Greenfield and share my experience with readers.

Recently we planned to get together with my daughter and her husband, and I thought bringing lunch would be a nice option for our visit. Beautiful spring weather was forecast and we decided to eat outdoors at their house. There are many take-out options in our area, and we have utilized them consistently throughout the pandemic to support our local restaurants.

For this meal I wanted to give my support to an organization that not only offers high quality/delicious food, but serves it at a “pay what you can” rate. Yes, I’m talking about Greenfield’s own Stone Soup Café.

I am familiar with their mission and the great work they do, so I decided to order four meals from them and pay what I considered a fair price for lunch for four people, including soup, salad, and dessert. I was able to order and pay online by following the link on their website.

When we picked up our meals, we also visited the “Free Market” they set up next to the pickup spot at All Souls Church. There were many choices for fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as dairy products and groceries to choose from. Shoppers can also make a donation to the market to help support the work of the café. Everyone was friendly and helpful; the spirit of fellowship was in the air.

We headed to my daughter’s house with lunch and some groceries to share. What a great way to be nourished by food and community.

Throughout this difficult year, Chef Kirsten and her crew have kept the café alive by pivoting to a pick-up and delivery model, and increasing production to meet the growing need. You can support their work in a number of ways, volunteer at the café, buy a meal, make a one-time tax-deductible donation, or commit to their “pay for a neighbor” campaign with a recurring weekly or monthly donation.

You can learn more about them including mission, menu, and support opportunities at their website: thestonesoupcafe.org
