Dallas restaurant Dream Cafe closed on May 31, 2021 after serving breakfast and brunch in the Quadrangle for 33 years.
The closure was planned: Parts of the Quadrangle are getting bulldozed and redeveloped.
According to a sign on Dream Cafe’s door, the restaurant is expected to move and reopen by June 14, 2021. It’ll be a quick walk to the new location, at 2811 McKinney Ave., in part of the former Christies Sports Bar & Grill. Like Dream Cafe, Christies was at that address for about 30 years.
Christies moved to Dallas’ Greenville Avenue in early 2021.
Dream Cafe was beloved as a kid-friendly restaurant with reasonably priced breakfast and brunch. The ricotta pancakes called Cloud Cakes were popular, as were the chicken and waffles covered in house gravy; omelettes; and benedicts. The new Dream Cafe will have a front patio and a back courtyard. Customers will be able to park in the below-ground parking.
Crews are already breaking down parts of the Quadrangle. Next door to the now-closed Dream Cafe, a gaping hole has been cut into the stucco above the word “Quadrangle,” off of Laclede Street.
Developer Stream Realty Partners, which is redoing the Quadrangle, plans to build a 12-story office tower and start a “major makeover” for some of the rest of the 4-acre complex, built in 1966. It will be an “intentional evolution and homage to the original,” according the Quadrangle plans.
CrushCraft Thai Street Eats, one of the remaining restaurants at the Quadrangle, will be part of the new development.
Stream Realty Partners also purchased the former Gingerman beer bar, across the street from the Quadrangle. The bar was torn down in March 2021.
A second Dream Cafe, at Mockingbird Lane and Abrams Road in the Lakewood neighborhood of Dallas, remains open, though it is not operated by Uptown Dallas Dream Cafe owner Mary O’Brien. Another Dream Cafe, in Addison, closed in 2018.
The new Dream Cafe will be at 2811 McKinney Ave., Dallas. It’s expected to open in June 2021.
