According to a press release, the Brick District Playhouse reopened the Playhouse Café on Monday. The café is located in the historic Fulton theatre at 613 Court St.
The Playhouse is a public charity that has been working to restore the building and support the performing arts through providing a performance venue, but now with a café that will be offering breakfast, lunch and catering.
“The Playhouse is really the culmination of almost ten years of work by businesses and volunteers in Fulton’s downtown,” Playhouse chair Tom Riley said. “We realized that importance to our community of preserving our history and supporting a vibrant and unique downtown — we simply had to renovate one of our most prominent buildings.”
In 2020, however, the COVID-19 pandemic struck the theatre hard.
“We lost the ability to generate revenue with events and lost our tenant as well,” Playhouse vice-chair Debbie LaRue said.
The Playhouse then formed a committee of volunteers to design and oversee its own restaurant in the front of the building.
“A restaurant that could operate throughout the week as well as support our rentals and events is key to our long-term success,” committee member Tana Real Williams said.
However, COVID-19 restrictions in the fall and the departure of a general manager forced the Café to close.
“As a non-profit and stewards of charitable funds, we knew we had to wait until we had the staff, the business plan, and the ability to operate successfully before we reopened,” Williams added.
This past spring, the Playhouse hired Brian Mann as the new general manager of the Café. Mann is a Callaway County resident and an experienced chef and manager. He was previously the catering chef for Glenn’s Café in Columbia.
“Brian has done a fantastic job finding local food providers, hiring staff, and keeping costs down, all while developing a unique menu” committee member Amanda Long said.
In addition to pastries, biscuits and gravy, and breakfast sandwiches, the Café will also offer Starbucks coffee and tea, soups, salads and sandwiches for lunch, along with house-made chips, pasta salad and desserts.
“The menu emphasizes affordable, locally-sourced, fresh ingredients prepared in-house that will complement our larger catering menu,” Mann said.
All net revenue from the Café will go to the charitable efforts to complete the restoration of the theatre and support the local performing arts.
“The Café and the theatre as a whole will be invaluable to supporting all the downtown businesses,” said Brick District president and Beks owner Garry Vaught, who has volunteered as an advisor and supporter of the Playhouse. “The downtown needs to be a destination again for food and fun, in addition to shopping and businesses.”
The Café will be open daily during the week 6:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m., and will feature a brunch on Saturdays with Eggs Benedict and other specials.
