Updated hours for new bakery
Family-owned Ricarmi Panaderia Y Pasteleria (11 E. 5th St., 831-206-3831, ricarmi-panaderia-y-pasteleria.business.site), which opened in mid-April, recently changed its hours. The family-owned bakery is now open 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Rotating selections include Manteconchas, Conchitas, Marianas, macarons, Mexican wedding cookies, donuts, empanadas, cake pops, and custom cakes. Herbal wreath making workshop, lunch at Thomas Farm
Community Cultural Tours is hosting a workshop, tour and lunch at Thomas Farm (1690 Pleasant Valley Road) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 27. Attendees will learn about herbs and how to arrange these into a wreath that can be used for future culinary creations. Farm owner Jean Thomas will facilitate the wreath-making process, utilizing organic herbs plus flora from the farm. Ticket prices include a light vegetarian lunch. Cost is $50/one person, $80/two people (making one wreath), and $15 for kids 10 and under when accompanying an adult. Far West Fungi hosts mushroom book signing
Mushroom shop and café Far West Fungi (224 Laurel St., 831-226-2626, farwestfungi.com) is hosting a book signing from noon to 3 p.m. Friday. The event celebrates award-winning author, researcher and mycologist Christopher Hobbs’ recently published book, Medicinal Mushrooms: The Essential Guide. Attendees can purchase books at the shop. Far West Fungi has a Moss Landing farm where it grows dozens of mushroom varieties; Hobbs is doing a medicinal talk at the farm Saturday and this requires tickets, which sold out three hours after the event was announced. Two West Cliff events this weekend
The West Cliff Food Truck Summer Series continues with a 4-8 p.m. Friday event at the Lighthouse Field parking lot on West Cliff Drive. Six food trucks will sell items: Scrumptious Fish and Chips, Nomad Momo, Taquizas Gabriel, Union Food Truck, Ate3One, and Miches and Ceviches. Lauren Wahl will perform live music. The West Cliff Outdoor Market continues its event series 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Lighthouse and Surfer’s parking lots on West Cliff Drive. Tickets available for Chaminade Vine to View
Chaminade Resort & Spa’s Vine to View Farm to Table dinner series, including courses with wine pairings, continues June 24. The outdoor dinner, held on the Courtyard Terrace, features wines from Bargetto Winery. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with 2018 Pinot Grigio SCM Regan Vineyard Heritage paired with appetizers for the table such as Monterey Bay Crabcake and Pulled Pork Slider. A four-course dinner follows; one highlight is Apple Smoked Bacon Wrapped Niman Ranch Pork Tenderloin with mustard seed crispy kale gremolata and celery root puree, paired with 2017 La Vita SCM. Tickets are $125 per person including tax and gratuity. Future events have various winery partners and are held the fourth or fifth Thursday each month through October. New pastry chef, menu highlights at Gabriella Café
Connie Villalobos joined Gabriella Café (910 Cedar St., 831-457-1677, gabriellacafe.com) as the new pastry chef last month; current dessert offerings include peach cobbler and vanilla flan. Owner Paul Cocking says that in terms of savory entrees, the spinach ricotta ravioli (from Watsonville’s Bigoli) is very popular. Also, there are only a few more days to enjoy “Grilled Fat Violini Asparagus” which is wrapped in prosciutto with Taleggio cheese. Another highlight: Storrs Christie Chardonnay is now available by the glass. Gabriella Cafe is open for lunch from 11:30 a.m. onward Tuesday through Friday. Wine flights at Alfaro plus family member’s new wine label
Alfaro Family Vineyards, run by husband and wife Richard and Mary Kay Alfaro, continues outdoor tastings at its Corralitos winery location (420 Hames Road, 831-728-5172, alfarowine.com). These are on Saturdays by appointment only. Tasting hours are noon to 5 p.m. and selections include 2019 Mary Katherine Chardonnay, 2018 Heirloom Clones Pinot Noir, and 2018 Ryan Spencer Syrah.
Also, the winery’s assistant winemaker, Ryan Alfaro (Richard and Mary Kay’s son), recently started his own wine label called Farm Cottage Wines (farmcottagewines.com). Wine is made from the Trout Gulch Vineyard Pinot Noir grapes. Aptos restaurant Mentone is currently featuring it, along with Alfaro wines, on its wine list. Farm Cottage wine is also available at shops and restaurants including Aptos’ Deer Park Wine and Spirits and downtown Santa Cruz’s Soif.

New season for Outstanding in the Field
Guest chef Brad Briske of Soquel’s HOME will join Outstanding in the Field’s founding chef/artist Jim Denevan as they prepare the first dinner of OITF’s new season on June 20. The event is at Happy Valley Farm, an apple orchard in the Santa Cruz Mountains tended by Jim’s brother Bill Denevan. Tickets are available at outstandinginthefield.com. This is one of 84 farm-to-table events OITF is doing in 2021. All event tickets include a reception with welcome beverages and passed appetizers, a tour of the farm or event site, and a four-course family-style seated dinner with wine pairings. OITF has dinners scheduled in the Santa Cruz area through early September; some are already sold out. Local Santa Cruz chefs coming out to the field kitchen include Andy Huynh/Full Steam Dumpling, Jessica Yarr/Chicken Foot and Santos Majano (formerly at Discretion Brewing). In 2021 OITF will travel to farms, vineyards, ranches and beaches across the U.S., plus the U.K. for two events and Africa (for the first time) with dinners in South Africa and Ghana.
