After over 105 years in Ybor City, La Segunda Bakery and Café will open an outpost across the bay in St. Petersburg. The bakery, famous for their Cuban bread, will debut this fall at 2436 4th Street North.
At 1,820 square feet, the St. Pete location will be smaller than the Ybor City and South Tampa locations, but still have room for 40 seats inside and 40 seats outside. While the Ybor City location will continue to focus on wholesale baking and counter service, the St. Pete location will specialize in grab-and-go, delivery, and catering.
“We are so excited to be bringing La Segunda’s authentic Cuban recipes and traditions to the St. Petersburg dining scene,” says Anthony More, a 4th generation owner of La Segunda. “We can’t wait to provide a more convenient location to the many St. Pete residents that have visited us in Tampa year after year.”
The menu in St. Pete will serve the same fresh-pressed Cubans, guava and cheese turnovers, and Italian cookies as the Ybor and South Tampa locations. And perhaps most importantly, the bakery’s signature Cuban bread will be baked on-site every morning in St. Pete instead of being trucked in from Tampa.
Sometimes overshadowed by their famous Cuban sandwich, La Segunda serves around nine other sandwiches, such as the Mojo Chicken Sandwich, Media Noche, and the Patrinostro, which is piled high with ham, capicola, mortadella, salami, provolone cheese, onion, lettuce, tomato, olive oil & vinegar on Cuban bread.
The history of La Segunda Bakery dates back to the late 19th Century, when a young soldier in the Spanish-American war, Juan More, developed a love for the taste of authentic Cuban bread. He dreamed of opening a bakery in the thriving Cuban neighborhood of Ybor City.
In 1915, More joined a co-op of bakers and cigar makers to open three bakeries in Ybor City – La Primera, La Segunda, and La Tercera (meaning The First, The Second, and The Third in English). It wasn’t long after opening that La Primera and La Tercera closed due to financial difficulties. But More decided to purchase La Segunda Bakery and run it himself.
La Segunda operated as a wholesale bakery until the 70’s when a café was added to the Ybor City location. The bakery has now been passed down four generations as Anthony Albert More and his son, Anthony Copeland More, keep Juan’s dream alive.
Today, La Segunda Bakery is the largest producer of Cuban bread in the world, pumping out a staggering 18,000 loaves every day. While a considerable amount is sold at the bakery and to local restaurants, thousands of loaves leave Tampa Bay headed for cities all over the country.
In 2018, the More family opened a second location in South Tampa on Kennedy Boulevard.
La Segunda Bakery and Café will open their third location this fall at 2436 4th Street North in St. Petersburg. Be sure to follow them on Facebook and Instagram for the latest specials and grand opening plans.
