The Open 2021: Here's the prize money payout for each golfer at Royal St. George's - Golf Digest

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: The reward for winning a major championship is so much more than financial. And that’s particularly so for the Open Championship, where the champion on Sunday at Royal St. George’s will walk off with golf’s most recognizable trophy—the claret jug—and its most distinguished label—“Champion Golfer of the Year.” (And if you’re a Brit, you might even get a title from the Queen.)

They do, however, hand out a little money to the winner and the rest of the field that makes the cut. OK, a lot of money. Earlier this month, the R&A announced it was increasing the overall prize money payout for this year’s Open by $1 million, raising the overall purse to $11.5 million. For the first time the winner will receive more than $2 million for his victory, cashing in $2.070 million (The R&A began paying out its prize money in U.S. dollars in 2016.)

How does the Open Championship’s payouts compare to other majors? Here’s the breakdown of the prize money payout at the three other men’s majors.

Masters: $11.5 million/$2.070 million
PGA Championship: $12 million/ $2.16 million
U.S. Open: $12.5 million/$2.25 million

Meanwhile, the largest purse/winner payout of any event on the PGA Tour is the Players Championship, where the overall purse is $15 million with the first-place check at $2.7 million.

Another interesting way to compare the prize money payout this week is to look at it in relation to how much the previous winners at Royal St. George’s have earned. It’s no surprise that there wasn’t a lot of money on the line in the early years of St. George’s hosting the Open. But it is interesting to see that the purse has nearly doubled since the last time the English course hosted the major.
