Ignite Donuts will soon be opening a cafe in Mt. Pleasant.
The donut business was founded by Casey Croad (who is also the CEO) and some of his close friends while they were studying at Central Michigan University (CMU).
Currently, the business specializes in selling donut kits that consists of six donut holes and some glaze for dipping. Ignite Donuts are sold at the Mt. Pleasant Farmers’ Market, The Market, The P.O.D. Market, Ric’s Food Center and other catering events. The business also does delivery sales for online orders.
Soon, Ignite Donuts will be opening their own cafe at 2208 S. Mission Street. The cafe is expected to open at some point in October of this year.
Earlier in 2021, Croad and his team worked with investors to find the building space for the cafe. They were able to find a lease that works in May 2021 and worked on expanding their current business model to fit the cafe setting.
“We wanted to do fresh fried donut holes and we want to create something that was similar to Subway,” Croad said. “We came up with the process and expanded the menu to donuts, coffee, milk shakes, and grilled cheese sandwiches.”
The menu is expected expand to other food items like pies and casseroles once they get more comfortable.
There won’t be a drive-thru option in the cafe but there will be a to-go station and online orders will still available.
Ignite Donuts is experiencing some issues with staff shortages but hopes to gain more staff members as they continue.
“We tried to create an awesome model that values people and encourages a more inclusive and loving environment,” Croad said. “Hiring is open to everyone though we mostly work with college students.”
Most of the focus will be on making the cafe successful though, if all goes well, the long-term plan is to expand their business to other institutions and continue to do catering for various events and stores.
“Our inclusive model works with campus dining and we’ve gained great connections through the school,” Croad said. “Mt. Pleasant isn’t the end the goal and we should be able to expand to other institutions.”
