MUSKEGON, MI – Big breakfasts, loaded omelets and homecooked dinners are staples at Lakeside Cafe in Muskegon.
With its menu of comfort food delivered by friendly staff, owner Ron Estlick says Lakeside Cafe is like “a big family.”
“I want people to come in every day, and I want them to feel like this is their living room,” he said.
Estlick grew up in the restaurant world with his parents operating a bar throughout his childhood. He always liked cooking and transformed the former Mike’s Landing into Lakeside Cafe in 2013.
Estlick kept the menu mostly the same but switched to fresh ingredients and biodegradable materials.
“It’s a place where you can come and enjoy a reasonably priced meal,” he said.

Well known for its breakfast, the menu is packed with morning classics like steak and eggs, biscuits and gravy and stacks of pancakes.
A classic is the Lakeside Ultimate Mess, which scrambles ham, onion, green peppers and potatoes with eggs. It’s topped with melty cheese and sausage gravy for a big breakfast plate available for $9.29.
Another “ultimate” dish are the hash browns stuffed with ham, green peppers, onions, cheese, ranch dressing and sausage gravy for $9.29.
Either can be paired with a steaming cup of coffee.
Although mornings are popular at the family owned restaurant, Lakeside Cafe also serves homemade dinner dishes that make customers feel at home.
“We do have the best liver and onions in town,” Estlick said.
A country fried steak covered in sausage gravy comes with mashed potatoes and vegetables for $10.99.
Estlick says loyal customers have been returning since “day one” for the family style atmosphere and familiar menu.
When restaurants were shut down for indoor dining due to COVID-19, one couple bought $500 in gift certificates to keep Lakeside Café afloat. In January, another customer mailed an envelope of cash with a note saying “hang in there.”
“The community, they just saved us,” Estlick said.
Lakeside Cafe, 1384 Laketon Ave., serves breakfast all day, seven days a week. It’s open Monday and Tuesday from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.
