Marble Falls Area EMS fish fry March 2 at Blue Bonnet Cafe - DailyTrib.com

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

It’s fish fry time in Marble Falls. The first of the semi-annual Marble Falls Area EMS fundraisers is from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, at Blue Bonnet Cafe, 211 U.S. 281.

Catfish plates with all the trimmings are $10 for ages 6 and older and $5 for ages 5 and younger. Call 830-693-2444 for takeout orders.

See which local “celebrities” will be waiting tables and handling carryout. And say “howdy” to KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune’s Mac McClennahan and Ben Shields, who will be broadcasting live from the event.

Blue Bonnet Cafe has been shutting down its normal operations twice a year for at least three decades to hold the fish fries, which benefit the Marble Falls Area EMS. The money supports the organization’s training budget for its 40-plus staff.

“With the majority of our staff at the paramedic level, as you can imagine, training costs are always ongoing,” said Johnny Campbell, the EMS executive director.

The second fish fry is the first Wednesday in October.

The fundraiser has become a highly anticipated community event. Members of the Marble Falls Area EMS as well as local leaders are on hand to help the cafe’s staff.

“This fish fry is all about the communities we serve and the tradition of the event,” Campbell said. “It is a long-standing tradition that bonds the community together twice a year. Everyone comes out and gets to see folks that they haven’t seen in a long time and also support a good cause.”

The late John Kemper and his wife, Belinda, started the fish fry tradition at the cafe, which they owned. When their daughter, Lindsay Plante, and her husband, David, took over the restaurant, they kept the event rolling.

“The Kemper/Plante family are and always have been part of that (community) giving spirt,” Campbell said. “For someone to shut down their restaurant two times per year for over 30 years to support a cause is very much unheard of. Additionally, the Blue Bonnet staff shares that same attitude of giving and support.”

For more information on the fish fry, tune in to the KBEY 103.9 FM morning show at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, March 1. Campbell will join co-hosts McClennahan and Donna Cruz to talk about the event and more.

First Look at Mokas Cafe | Wichita By E.B. - Wichita By E.B.

Mokas Cafe

A new coffee shop is officially open in Wichita. Mokas Cafe is a Kansas-based company founded in Salina, KS. Located at 142 N. McLean Blvd, this is their first entry into the Wichita market. It’s a great location, being situated in Delano and essentially next door to the Advanced Learning Library.

One big difference between the locations around Kansas is that the Wichita store sells breakfast all day. There’s also a smaller lunch menu offering at Wichita, which could expand as time goes on.

We swung by in the morning for breakfast. Our meal consisted of a half-order of biscuits and gravy, a breakfast burrito, strawberry banana smoothie and frappe royale.

I was a huge fan of the biscuits and gravy; the biscuits were light and fluffy and the gravy was tasty with just the right level of peppery goodness. At first glance, I was thinking the breakfast burrito was looking a little puny. Don’t let it fool you, it was packed full of egg, cheese, bacon and more. It wasn’t a burrito that would leave you feeling stuffed, though, if that’s your goal. It was more of a light breakfast that would hold you off until lunchtime.

The staff was handing out some cinnamon rolls that people could sample. I didn’t get to try one since my daughter called dibs on every sample they handed us. She was loving it and ate her weight in cinnamon rolls.

Mokas Cafe

The staff was on top of everything and extremely friendly. With locations in Hays and Salina, they really brought that small-town friendliness with them.

Here’s a video look inside Mokas Cafe:

Local Cat Cafe Looking For Volunteers - 9 & 10 News - 9&10 News

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

With a handful of recent no-calls, no-shows, and kitten season right around the corner, Karma Kat Cafe in Mount Pleasant is looking for volunteers.

“With volunteering, it’s just a lot of your basic cleaning,” said Kristen Bully, manager at Karma Kat Cafe. “It’s a lot of work. That’s why, at least, we need 3 to 4 people, plus the person working to get it all done in time.”

Elizabeth Armstrong is a kitten foster and volunteer at Karma Kat Cafe. She said it’s important for the shelter to stay clean.

“It’s also a shelter,” she said. “It’s a place where cats come from all over in different situations, and it needs to be cleaned.”

Although the Karma Kat Cafe is considered a business, all profit made goes back to the animals.

Annelise Hansen is a first-time visitor. She said it’s a great way to get cats adopted.

“We have like a humongous stray issue, especially (when) people neglect the animals,” she said. “I think just bringing them in and giving them a chance to be seen, is just exposure, and I think that’s great.”

Karma Kat Cafe said they fix around 35 cats per month. Right now, they are looking for volunteers to help everyday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., to help with things like sanitizing the cat room and cages, cleaning the litter box, and just making sure the cafe is ready to open each day.

“There’s over 40 cats usually,” said Armstrong. “There’s a lot of litter, everything needs to be sanitized… help is appreciated every time. The cats very much appreciate it, and you’ll have get kitten love.”

Parkway Cafe in Springfield purchased by owner of Charlie Parker's Diner - The State Journal-Register

Hive Bakery & Café Opens - Palm Beach

Jay and Amber Felton

Sara McCann’s Hive Collective design and lifestyle group is growing with the addition of Hive Bakery & Café. The West Palm eatery features an array of baked goods, pastries, soups, salads, take-home dinners, and more courtesy of the husband-and-wife culinary team of Jay and Amber Felton.

Now five years married, the Feltons met in Chicago and worked in San Francisco before moving here in early 2020. While the pandemic put a pause on their restaurant plans, it also enabled them to get to know the area and recipe test at home.

“All the training that we’ve had is great, but every area has a specific taste that they like,” says Jay, who serves as executive chef. Amber is pulling from her Michelin three-star background in her role as executive pastry chef. They’ve put together an eclectic yet recognizable menu in the hopes of making Hive Bakery & Café a “couple-days-a-week place,” says Amber.

Flourless chocolate cake

Patrons can expect everything from hazelnut and date twice-baked croissants to house-made candies. Decadent desserts such as flourless chocolate cake (made with Cacao Barry Guayaquil 64 percent dark chocolate) can be enjoyed by the slice or as baby cakes, presented in beautiful takeaway boxes. “This is perfect for me because I get to do a little bit of everything,” adds Amber.

Salmon salad

For his savory contributions, Jay is focusing on familiar flavors that pack a punch. Think: truffled mushroom tartine, wood-grilled salmon salad, and a turkey club on Amber’s brioche. “I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel,” he notes. “I’m trying to make the classics that everybody knows with a small twist.”

'Bringing together communities:' MSU professors to open bookstore, cafe and wine bar - The State News

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

Hooked: a coffee shop, wine bar and book store all in one. Owned and dreamt up by MSU professors Matt Grossmann and Sarah Reckhow, the shop is set to open in the spring.

The couple first met in California, where the wine scene was large, and indie coffee shops were easy to come by. Years later, after moving to Michigan, they took a sabbatical in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where they were reminded of Lansing’s lack of cafés and wine bars. If that weren’t enough, they arrived home to find two of their local bookstores had closed.

From there, the idea of “Hooked” was born.

“That was kind of the point when the idea started to change from just an idea that we talked about very casually, to something we tried to actually create,” Reckhow said.

Because it’s a combination of three niche interests, they hope that the vibe of Hooked will change throughout the day.

“A little brighter coffee-shop feel during daylight hours,” Reckhow said. “But shifting to a little bit more wine-bar feel in the evening.”

The shop will also inevitably serve different audiences throughout the day due to its location. It is located at 3142 E. Michigan Ave., Suite F in Lansing, but remains less than a mile away from campus.

“We really want to be welcoming to this very wide range of communities,” Reckhow said. “Everyone from the seniors, to the students, to folks like us, who have kids.”

The café will always be serving cappuccinos or your favorite vanilla lattes, but a large focus will be on getting customers to try new things. The couple will host wine tastings often and offer monthly subscriptions to try different coffees and wines.

“We hope it brings a community space for people to explore new interests,” Reckhow said. “Learn about new topics, taste and try new things and meet and gather.”

Once you make it past the beverage section of the shop, Grossmann says you’ll be surrounded by 10,000 books. The selection will be largely general interest books, but the couple still plans to draw inspiration from their own interests.

“We want to be able to have MSU faculty books actually available for sale,” Reckhow said. “Bringing together communities, that’s part of our goal.”

As political scientists, Reckhow said there would also be a section that specializes in current affairs, more than the average bookstore. They will also carry a large selection from Michigan authors.

Hooked is still under construction but is tentatively planned to open on April 19. The bar and tables will be built from wood purchased from the MSU Forestry Department. The ties to the university are a tribute to just how eager the couple is to connect Lansing to the college community.

“We do also hope that it sort of serves as a connector,” Grossmann said. “So that it ends up being a space where students feel welcome, so do retirees, and I think that’s gonna be hard to do, but I think we’re kind of well positioned to do that.”

Newly Reopened Crown Cafe Brings Classics and Persian Eats to Watertown - The Heights - The Heights

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

Crown Cafe—a family-owned Watertown staple for years—brings unique Persian flair to the classic all-American diner and recently reopened after coming under new management and a series of renovations.

“I wanted to do mostly mainstream American breakfast and lunch with a little bit of Persian, you know, hints here and there,” said Sepehr Madani, the new manager at Crown Cafe.

With a smaller, simplified menu, Crown Cafe added some authentic Persian dishes to the menu, attracting both regulars that have been coming to the cafe for years as well as those looking for a bold take on diner classics.

“The previous owners had a super big menu with items that not a lot of people were ordering,” Mandani said. “So in terms of inventory and keeping things fresh, we eliminated a lot of that, which also allows us to introduce some Persian food to the menu.”

New menu items such as the Persian kebab, sholeh-zard—a type of saffron rice pudding—and Persian spinach omelets have been doing exceptionally well, especially among customers that have no prior exposure to Middle Eastern food, according to Mandani.

Other Persian specialties include the kotlet sub, which features fried patties of chicken or beef topped with potato, onion, and egg and comes with a side dish of saffron-dressed basmati rice.

Customers craving more of the old-school diner staples can count on omelets, pancakes, BLTs, subs, and sandwiches. The Crown Burger boasts a handmade half-pound patty topped with traditional lettuce and tomato and finished off with the restaurant’s homemade Crown Sauce.

Since taking over the diner in September, Mandani said his team spent about three months renovating everything from the dining area to the kitchen equipment and the decorations, hoping to curate a more modern energy that can cater to a wide variety of customers.

“We wanted to make the restaurant look more inviting, and without even changing our signage outside, we’ve noticed that even the little changes we’ve made have expanded our clientele to a younger crowd,” Mandani said.

The cafe now features an open-concept interior with brighter lighting and a warmer atmosphere.

Despite the many new changes, Crown Cafe maintains its status as a Watertown classic.

With omelets priced at $6.99 and a Persian-style Olivier chicken sub at $7.99, Crown Cafe provides Watertown with high quality food at reasonable prices, according to its website

The cafe, located on Watertown’s Main Street, is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends.

“Our focus is to just provide good food for affordable prices,” Mandani said. “We’re not aiming to cater to any specific demographic in particular and want to be able to accommodate anyone that comes in.”

Reopening of Luke's Cafe leaves stomachs happy - Utahstatesman

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

With the classroom quiet, all of a sudden an earthquaking grumble originates from your epicenter. The professor, your peers and even the kids in the next class can hear that sustenance is needed, and it is needed extremely soon.

Almost every college student has faced the dilemma of forgetting lunch at home and facing debilitating hunger pains throughout their classes.

Going home is not an option, home is too far away.

The reopening of Luke’s Family Cafe on the Quad has created a fun, new environment to eat and study. Located on the first floor of the Agricultural Sciences Building, students and professors alike can easily enjoy a quick study break snack or lunch for $2.50 per street taco.

“I am really excited to have Luke’s back and in the ag building where I go to study and where a lot of my classes are,” said Cam Jessup, a Utah State University student majoring in equestrian studies. “My favorite thing to get there is probably the horchata or the carne asada tacos. I mainly just like how fast but also fresh it feels eating it.”

Two years ago, the original Luke’s Family Cafe had to close down after seven years of Aggie coffee and ice cream dissemination. Throughout the pandemic, the cafe’s doors remained closed.

Yet, after leaving the space empty for over a year, USU’s Dining Services said they dreamt of the reopening of Luke’s Cafe into something new and geared more towards the current Aggie needs.

“From our executive chefs, right down to more than 400 student employees, we want to make sure that (students) enjoy all of (their) dining experiences on campus,” said Jaime Bradford, the associate director of Utah State’s Retail Operations.

Bradford said the best way to accomplish this goal would be to take the concept of a street taco truck and make it into an on-campus dining experience.

According to the dining services, since the Steeped cafe was already serving Starbucks on campus, they thought a different restaurant would serve Aggie students better.

After finding two local Latin natives living in Logan who already owned a thriving taco truck business, Luke’s found its new menu.

“One of my favorite places to come during the day, when I forgot my lunch of course, would be Luke’s new taco shack,” said Samuel Parkinson, a USU student studying chemical engineering. “I lived in Mexico for some time and this salsa is pretty authentic — not spicy enough but very good.”

According to the dining services, Feb. 17 will be the grand opening. Anthony Linton, the manager of Luke’s Cafe, said there will be free food, giveaways and the creators of Luke’s street taco recipe will be there.

“Though Luke’s new taco services have not gained much traction yet on campus,” Linton said, “this hidden gem is soon to be discovered and we believe it will become an Aggie favorite quickly.”

American Girl Cafe Attracts the Influencer Set - The New York Times

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

The American Girl Cafe has become an unlikely party spot for influencers and their imitators.

On a Monday morning in February, Harry Hill, 27, showed up at the American Girl Cafe wearing a vintage Christian Dior sweater and carrying a Coach tote that held two of his beloved dolls. He was joined by Serena Kerrigan, 27, who brought her dolls in a pink mesh Victoria’s Secret bag.

Mr. Hill, an influencer, is well documented as a fan: He has posed at a 7-Eleven dressed identically to one of his dolls on Instagram. He dressed as the Samantha doll for Halloween and created a series of memes made with American Girl dolls.

Ms. Kerrigan, also an influencer, was dressed by her stylist in “head-to-toe Zara” — a Kelly green skirt suit with feather cuffs. “I am the green M&M,” she said of her outfit. Like the previous iteration of the green M&M character, Ms. Kerrigan’s personal brand can be ribald.

The last time she and Mr. Hill came to American Girl Place, she made a TikTok video in which she got her Samantha doll checked for S.T.I.s at the store’s doll hospital.

The two were far from the first adults to show up — with dolls — to hang out there.

“Come with me to get absolutely obliterated at the American Girl Doll Cafe,” begins a TikTok video titled “American Girls grow into American Women,” uploaded by the comedian Sally Darr Griffin.

In the video, Ms. Griffin, 25, shouts out the labels she’s wearing — “Dress is Hill House, sunglasses are Coach” — then takes the first sip of what will be four mimosas, supplemented with a tiny nip of vodka that she smuggled into the American Girl Cafe at the Grove shopping mall in Los Angeles.

Ms. Griffin was joined by four other women in their 20s, each accompanied by a doll seated in a chair attached to the table.

“I was not obliterated,” Ms. Griffin clarified in a Zoom interview. “It’s just better to say that for the clicks.”

Gabby Jones for The New York Times

The clicks came. Ms. Griffin’s video amassed more than 600,000 views on TikTok, and a micro-trend of grown folks dining and drinking with dolls was born.

It’s not a wholly novel concept for adults to return to kid-centric locations for a dose of nostalgia and irony. Goths descended on Disneyland for an annual trip called “Bats Day in the Fun Park” for decades. Liana Aghajanian, a journalist in Detroit, wrote that she celebrated her birthdays at Chuck E. Cheese locations even in adulthood as a homage to happy childhood memories as a first-generation American.

Of the dozen American Girl Place locations, five feature full-service restaurants that serve items like cinnamon buns, macaroni and cheese, and smoothies, along with an extensive dessert menu. The original Chicago location, which opened in 1998, secured a full liquor license so it could host galas and benefits. New York is the only other location that serves liquor, but beer and wine are served at all of the cafes.

A representative for the company said that it doesn’t condone its dolls engaging in age-inappropriate behavior such as drinking alcohol, but the company welcomes American Girl fans of all ages.

Jamie Cygielman, the president of American Girl, wrote in a statement, “We know our devoted fans never forget the beloved American Girl characters and stories they grew up with, and we’re thrilled to have them reconnect and reminisce with us as adults.”

The New York cafe, where Ms. Kerrigan and Mr. Hill recorded their social media content, features cutesy touches like tiny bows tied to each cloth napkin. The banquettes are berry colored, and the photo-ready walls feature bright patterns set against crisp whites.

Even the cafe’s soundtrack, which mixes 1980s pop staples with campy original songs written about the American Girl characters, seems tuned to the whims of Gen Zers and millennials looking for immersive settings for their social media feeds.

Gabby Jones for The New York Times

American Girl Place retail stores in the United States sell a wide variety of toys and accessories centered on upscale dolls, whose prices start at around $100. Each doll has a back story that locates her in a specific era of American history.

The first dolls, released in 1986, were Molly, a bookish girl from the 1940s; Kirsten, a pioneer from Sweden; and Samantha, an orphan adopted into a posh New York family during the Edwardian era. Each doll stars in historical novellas, which are sold separately.

Some American Girl fans identify with one doll’s personality, referring to themselves as “an Addy” or “a Felicity.”

When a staff member overheard me bemoaning the fact that Molly never gets her due among American Girl fans, she brought me a Molly doll and clipped her chair to the rim of my table.

Since 1986, many more characters have been added to the American Girl roster, expanding the eras and ethnicities represented by the dolls. American Girl also sells custom dolls, and introduced Logan, its first American Boy, in 2017.

For some adults, the American Girl Place retail locations loomed large in their childhood psyches. Ms. Kerrigan, who appeared in a New York Daily News story about American Girl Place’s opening, has been a fan of the brand since she was 4.

“It’s literally my dream come true,” Ms. Kerrigan said, of returning to the store as an adult.

Her dining companion was similarly effusive. “It’s Disneyland for literary girls and gays,” said Mr. Hill in a Zoom interview.

The company has taken notice of Mr. Hill’s enthusiasm. At an event for the luggage company Stoney Clover Lane in October, Ms. Cygielman recognized Mr. Hill and introduced herself. The company also hosted him as its guest at the Manhattan cafe a few weeks ago.

On this occasion, the two influencers posed for selfies, recorded content and mugged for their phones as servers brought several courses that included cinnamon buns, crudités, buttered noodles and chicken fingers.

The vast cafe was mostly empty apart from five other parties, each made up of children and their chaperones. Mr. Hill and Ms. Kerrigan took their seats, got their dolls situated and toasted rose martinis served in glasses rimmed with pink sugar.

For some, 11:30 is early for a drink, but Mr. Hill had already spent the morning mixing water with cranberry juice to simulate cocktails for a sponsored Instagram post. This time the vodka was real.

Dessert was particularly well suited for Instagram, with a rainbow layer cake modeled from an American Girl toy set, a cup of chocolate mousse meant to look like a potted daisy, and heart-shaped sugar cookies with an accompanying D.I.Y. frosting kit, all served by a remarkably attentive and gracious staff.

The store comped their meal, as they sometimes do for influencers, but Ms. Kerrigan insisted on running her credit card so she could tip their server. As she and Mr. Hill began to pack up their dolls, a party of six adults and no children was seated nearby.

They were visiting from Austin, Texas, to celebrate Timothy Flitton’s 33rd birthday. They were inspired to have their birthday party at the American Girl Cafe after seeing Ms. Griffin’s TikTok video. Like Ms. Griffin, they ordered mimosas.

“We’re living our millennial fantasy,” said Mx. Flitton, who sported aquamarine hair and a rainbow sweater. Kaylan Howard, a friend, agreed.

“They were too expensive when I was a child,” Ms. Howard, 32, said of the dolls. “And now we can afford it, should we want it.” She didn’t want it, but said she appreciated the gratis loaners they were each given for the meal.

A server emerged from the kitchen carrying a birthday cake shaped like a giant petit four. Mx. Flitton and the rest of the party erupted in applause.

The cheers died down as the waiter walked past the table. The cake was for someone seated behind them who was celebrating her ninth birthday.

Spontaneous combustion sparks fire at Windmill Cafe in Savage - FOX 9

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

The scene inside the Windmill Cafe in Savage after a spontaneous combustion started the restaurant on fire last month.

Standing outside the Windmill Cafe in Savage, things look the way they have for the last 50 years.

But take one step inside the front door, and it’s clear that things are definitely not normal. Everything from the coffee cups to the daily specials sign is covered in thick, black soot.

"All I want to do is just start scrubbing. That's just always been what we do is clean it up and get it ready for the next day," said Kari Whetsel, who owns the Windmill Cafe with her husband, Adam Langfeld.

"That's the worst part. I want so badly to be open again," Whetsel told FOX 9.

At some point on the evening of Jan. 24, a fire broke out on the diner's counter, forcing Whetsel and Langfeld to close the restaurant's doors indefinitely.

An investigation by the State Fire Marshal revealed cooking grease residue on freshly washed rags spontaneously combusted, sparking the smoldering flames.

Whetsel and Langfeld bought the cafe from the original owners in January 2020 and have already weathered a month-long shutdown and COVID restrictions.

Until they can open again, their concern is with their nine full- and part-time employees.

"Insurance should take care of all the stuff, but it doesn't help the people who work for us," said Langfeld.

"It's literally our heart and soul and it's the heart and soul of everybody else that loves this place," said Whetsel.

A GoFundMe page has been established to help Windmill Cafe workers with their lost wages.

It's still unclear when the restaurant will be open again, but the owners say their best-case scenario would be to have things up and running again by June.

An Ambitious All-Day Cafe With Congee and Kumquat Toast Lands in the West Village - Eater NY

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

El Condor, an ambitious all-day cafe and coffee shop from a pair of powerhouse restaurant operations and real estate veterans, has opened its doors in the West Village, at 95 Greenwich Avenue, between West 12th and Bank streets.

Former Alain Ducasse operations director Nicolas Simon and real estate broker Mucjon Demiraj — who also run a restaurant consulting firm that counts big-ticket names like cocktail bar Death & Co among its clients — are behind the cafe. El Condor’s coffee program starts with two initial blends, a smooth and slightly sweet Brazilian and Guatemalan mix for the drip coffee, plus a sweeter, low-acid espresso blend. Each of the coffee blends are made with a roaster installed in the basement of the space.

El Condor is in competition with plenty of coffee shops already scattered in the West Village, but Simon, who is French, says that he is aiming for a lighter, sweeter, European-style coffee at El Condor versus more acidic American blends. “We’re really trying to balance the proper acidity with some sweetness, some caramel notes — we really want to do something very round, very soft, and smooth,” Simon says.

For the food, pastry veteran Youssef Aderdour — who previously worked at Australian resorts and flashy Midtown haunts like Zuma and American Cut — oversees a wide-ranging, all-day cafe menu that includes muesli with coconut yogurt and goji berries, a congee with ginger, scallions, and turmeric oil, kumquat preserve spread over toast, and roti with pulled lamb shoulder. Once a liquor license is approved, the team plans to add beer and wine to the drinks menu.

The pair designed the brick-walled, 500-square-foot space with both grab-and-go customers and those who intend to park themselves at the cafe for hours in mind. The 18-seat dining room has an open tab system similar to a bar, and customers can book reservations to claim tables ahead of time for group gatherings.

Simon and Demiraj also say they have prioritized employee benefits in the cafe’s operations. El Condor is a no-tipping establishment where wages start at $20 per hour and there’s a revenue share system. Their goal is to establish a baseline annual pay rate of at least $50,000 for each employee. The focus has paid off: when they were hiring for El Condor, they received 90 applications for 10 to 12 open positions, according to Simon. “As long as you don’t properly take care of people in this business, [the industry is] not going to get any better,” he says.

Simon and Demiraj see El Condor as an extension of their hospitality consulting company Wilcuma, which has guided headlining brands like Death & Co in national expansion plans. The coffee shop, they say, will be a calling card to demonstrate what kind of an operation they can run on their own — and they already have El Condor expansion plans in the works.

The pair initially raised money for the coffee shop through a crowdfunding campaign, where they netted nearly $299,900 from 128 investors. Now that the first shop has gotten off the ground, they’re already eyeing secondary spots elsewhere in NYC as well as locations in Houston, Texas; and Nashville, Tennessee. They aim to adapt the shop to fit easily into different setups, like a hotel lobby. It’s not exactly the Blank Street method (the coffee chain known for contorting into cubbyholes of vacant real estate all over NYC) but it allows for expansion without the staggering 10-year lease. “We can plant the flag in another location, if you will, without requiring too much capital,” Simon says.

El Condor is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Little Fox Cafe & Bakery opening in Medina this June - cleveland.com

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

MEDINA, Ohio – Two Medina residents are using their skills to open Little Fox Cafe & Bakery, a new quick-service coffee shop and restaurant. The shop is slated to open at 540 Blake Ave. in June.

Owner and baker Catherine Hudson and managing partner and barista Jess Hazeltine decided to form the concept months ago, after meeting at Diner 42. Hudson was working as a waitress when Hazeltine ordered a meal.

“I served her her lunch, and we just started talking and I ended up telling her that I have always wanted a bakery,” Hudson said. “One thing led to another and we decided to move forward with this together.”

Hudson went to the Medina County Career Center for a culinary degree, then graduated from the Art Institute of Ohio-Cincinnati with a culinary degree focused on pastries.

Hazeltine, who also serves as a city council representative for Ward 1 in Medina, has experience as a barista. She worked as a barista manager at an Arabica in college, and fills in for local coffee shops in Medina when baristas are needed.

“We just decided, ‘Okay, we want to do this. You’re a baker, I can do coffee,’” Hazeltine said. “We’re two regular moms who decided to open a bakery.”

The two found an investor and a building on Blake Avenue, which is currently the tanning studio Medina Tone & Tan. The tanning studio’s lease ends in April, then Hudson and Hazeltine will take over, spending a few months on a complete renovation to add in a commercial kitchen and remodel.

Transforming a tanning studio into a bakery will be an intense project, Hazeltine said.

“We will be remodeling everything and doing a demo on the inside before opening in June,” she said. “It’s going to be a very big renovation of the existing building.”

Once finished, Little Fox Cafe & Bakery will be open, with drive-through service available for local customers. The restaurant will be located just down the block from Hazeltine’s home, and near Hudson’s home as well, Hazeltine said.

Little Fox’s menu will focus on baked goods crafted by Hudson, including brownies, muffins and -- a particular highlight -- yeast donuts. A few other basic drive-through items, like breakfast sandwiches and some lunch sandwiches, will also be on the menu.

On the coffee side, expect drip coffee and basic espresso drinks like mochas, lattes and cappuccinos.

“Catherine is a baker. That’s the part we’re excited about,” Hazeltine said. “We’re excited to bring a new opportunity for donuts to that side of town… There are a lot of people who drive past us on their way to wherever we’re going. We wanted to pick a location that was not close to any other business. We’re not in this to compete with anybody.”

To sum up the project, Hazeltine pointed to Little Fox’s website, which gives information about the cafe and bakery, which is “locally owned and operated by two badass babes with a dream.”

Michelin-Starred Oxomoco Team's Vegan All-Day Cafe Xilonen Shuts Down After One Year - Eater NY

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

The team behind Michelin-starred Mexican restaurant Oxomoco is calling it quits at Xilonen, their more casual vegan restaurant in Greenpoint. In a text message to Eater, owner Justin Bazdarich confirmed that the restaurant will not be reopening following a two-month temporary closure. He attributed the decision to “factors outside our control,” including operating restrictions on restaurants during the pandemic and the latest wave of omicron.

It’s a quick run for the meatless Mexican restaurant, which was barely open a year. Xilonen opened in December 2020, and appeared to have all the makings of an instant hit: a well-lit corner location, an acclaimed chef leading its kitchen, and a history in the neighborhood thanks to Oxomoco, one of three Michelin-starred Mexican restaurants in New York City, from the same team. But Xilonen, which Eater critic Ryan Sutton gave an encouraging review early on, never quite took off as planned.

The restaurant, whose plating and prices could have appeared on an upscale tasting menu, was limited to serving its dishes in compostable, takeout-friendly containers to start, due to a citywide ban on indoor dining at the time. Shortly after Xilonen opened for indoor dining, head chef Alan Delgado departed from the restaurant due to undisclosed circumstances. Later in the year, Momofuku alum Yara Herrera was hired to lead the kitchen, and the menu was reworked with an all-day cafe angle to include nachos with pickles and brown beans, charred broccoli burritos, and a celery root milanesa torta. The restaurant didn’t manage to secure its liquor license until last fall, after it had already been open for over six months.

Xilonen temporarily closed in December, amid a larger wave of closures in north Brooklyn due to the omicron variant. It’s the second restaurant from Bazdarich to close during the pandemic, following the Lower East Side location of Speedy Romeo in 2020. The space that Xilonen occupied was previously home to Maison Premiere offshoot Sauvage, which also shut down in 2020.

Bazdarich is now turning his attention to the opening of Bar Tulix, a Mexican fine dining restaurant set to open in Manhattan later this month.

Emma Orlow contributed reporting.

Well-known cafe in thriving tourist area hits the market - Sunshine Coast News

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

A renowned Noosa Heads cafe, which has traded for more than 20 years, is for sale.

Canteen cafe, at 2/4 Sunshine Beach Road, has hit the market and Ray White Commercial Noosa and Sunshine Coast North agent John Petralia said there was a “huge opportunity” for a new owner to take over.

He said the licenced business included all of the fixtures, seating for up to 70 people and it was fully staffed.

“The business and menu have been developed to suit the Noosa market, resulting in a strong year-round local clientele, topped up by the holiday crowds,” Mr Petralia said.

“This long tenure has also allowed the owner to successfully run the business under management for many years.

“This adds to the growth potential for a new owner by allowing them to step into the business (if they wish) to reduce costs and increase profit.

“There is a huge opportunity for the new owner to open at night and pick up on the thriving night time trade in the Junction.”

The business and menu have been developed to suit the Noosa market.

Mr Petralia said the Noosa Junction dining scene had really “taken off” and had become very popular with locals and tourists.

“The last two years has seen a significant increase in tourists to the region which has resulted in low vacancy rates and lots of hungry people,” he said.

As the business is currently being run under management, Mr Petralia said it would suit a range of buyers.

“An experienced cafe/restaurateur could build on the solid base that has been created,” he said.

“Or, because it is run under management, someone who is newer to the industry can step in and the business will continue to run while they build on their knowledge and confidence.”
